Volvo Rear Axle or Sierra Diff and Shafts?
Hey all,
Hopefully picking up my Volvo 740 Turbo soon and was wondering what to do about the rear of the car, I do have a Sierra rear diff (3.92:1), Bolt on
Shafts and brakes linked to my IRS, however the Volvo runs a rear Axle similar to the old Escort axles, now since this will also come with brakes etc,
which would be better to use?
I am wondering if the Volvo rear would be lighter all in than the Sierra with IRS and then I could use the original Volvo Propshaft other than mating
the Volvo-Sierra.
Any ideas or comment would be great, I am thinking of using the Volvo axle to keep the running gear all Volvo and hence strong, therefore being able
to sell my Sierra stuff and recoop some cash.
Thanks Mark

What ratio is the diff in the volvo? I would be inclined to use the volvo axle if it were me but you will get lots of different opinions on that.
"That thing you're thinking - it wont be that."

I assume the chasis isn't built yet?
I'd be inclined to go live axle and stick with the Volvo running gear.

absolutely nothing wrong with a live axle. don't believe what they say about them on top gear!
i'd say its a much easier install than irs too

Topgear guys only criticise the live axles held onto the car with cartsprings, 5 link suspension is better than many setups.
I would stick with the Volvo, cheap, easy, good and matches all the other components you will be using.
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

Chassis is built and has IRS with the DIff fitted etc, but shouldnt take much to fit apart from 4 new brackets and the shafts to position the Volvo
Axle.
I think the Ratio on the Volvo axle is 3.54:1 which will be quite nice

If the chassis is built for irs, you may not be able to fit a decent length panhard rod, but a watts linkage with the pivot on the chassis would work
well.

Where the rods meet both the chassis and pivot point, what type of joints are they? Also does your pivot piece have a bearing on the centre hole?
Thanks
