Sierra Track
I know this has been asked (and answered!) before but I've lost the link (and yes, I did look through all 8 pages of 'Running Gear' Posts before
posting this) so please could someone tell me:
The exact track of the Sierra and the exact track of the MKII escort. If the figure could be from comparable points then I'd be very grateful!

I think it's 1468mm rear and 1453 front.

Thanks a lot Dunc. I hadn't realised they were different front and rear.
Is that from inside of tyre or wheel or somewhere else?
Also, anyone know how this compares with the MKII escort?

Just as an aside to this discussion:
Is there any disadvantage, from a handling point of view, in having a diferent front and rear track?
I ask 'cos although I am building a standard width escort based locost I was wondering about using a cortina or capri rear axle to fill the arches
better.

Mk 2 escort in my book is 50" front 51"rear as for the diference in track,most cars are like that so i cant see a problem.

If Dunc's figure for the rear is 1468mm that's 57.8" which compares to 51" for John's MK2 Escort rear.
Is the Sierra really nearly seven inches wider track? I always thought it was about 3.5-4"?
Across what areas of the axle are you guys measuring/reading this? Is is possible we're not comparing like with like?
Sorry to question this but if it is 7inches then I'm gonna have to change loads of suspension geometry so I need to check!

Sierra rear track is +/- 1530 mm less twice the wheels positive offset or plus twice the negative offset (or 1530 if offset=0).
Measured a rear IRS axle with drum brakes.

The Haynes manual for Sierra doesn't give a track dimension. Their book for the Granada/Scorpio does- front 1477mm, rear 1492. Presumably these are
Ford's figures, and will be the industry standard measurement i.e. from the centre to centre of the tyre's width. This will take account of the
wheel offset and the tyre width.
A more useful measurement to us would be from the hub bolt face, because various different wheels can be bought.
Joao has already provided us with the rear Sierra measurement i.e. 1530mm
Assuming that the Granada track is the same as the Sierra, that would suggest that Granada wheels have positive offset of 19mm each. I've no way of
checking that, but it would seem reasonable.
Anyone have any measurements for the standard mark4/5 cortina front and rear?

I've been told on several occasions that the Granada is 1" wider than the Sierra. I can't confirm this easily though.

Acording to my autodata book the granny is 1" wider,the measurement is taken from the centre of the tyre tread so a different wheel ofset would alter
the dimensions,you need to eat more often

Is your autodata book real? Or just a figment of the imagination caused by eating too many of Terry's fry-ups?
What figures does it give for Sierra (front an rear) please.
Sorry but need to confirm for definate that I have f'cked up!

Ok then, that's two sources so I'd better believe it!
Oh well, if it's seven inches wider as opposed to the four that I expected then atleast the 'caravaning' effect will definately not be a
problem!
Specially once I've got those 18" wheels on!

hi james don,t worry about the track difference, take alook at the old citroen ds models they had 8 inches difference in track although wider at the
front rather than the rear, but they could still handle. cheers davef.
