help with Raw Striker halfshafts
I have broken both the halfshafts of my Raw Striker (Sierra donor) and I have a track day soon...
I contacted Raw but no answers yet: can you please suggest me alternative makers/vendors that can supply me
the halfshafts? (better if I can contact them via internet: I'm from Italy...)
thanks for helping

Are they standard Sierra halfshafts?
Honestly I don't know: they are the original ones from Raw (the diff of course is a Sierra original one): I'm not a great expert of kit
car building
(I bought the car used in UK) but I thought that the halfshafts were one of those parts that you couldn't get directly from the donor car...but
this is only
a guess: of course if someone could confirm me this it would be important: If Raw uses standard Sierra halfshafts it would be muche easier to find
them...

Hi there,
How did you manage to break both half-shafts? Normally when 1 goes the other one becomes unstressed and hence protected. Maybe you have some clever
LSD.
Anyway, that is irrelevant, I am only interested.
Assuming you have an IRS striker (and not a live axle model, which uses Escort back end).
I got my Sierra driveshafts shortened by RAW. They cut, drill a hole down the middle, then plug that and weld it all up, so there is no sleeve. They
told me that this keeps the driveshaft more spingy and hence less sensitive to shock loads.
Raw was sold recently to a new outfit, have you tried the contact address and telephone number from this site?

If they are push-in shafts (tripode joints) then you might want to ask them to fit the CV joints as these can be a pain to install. I think the
lobro's are easier to deal with.

You are right: actually only one is definetely broken but my mechanic told me that also the other one seems near to broke so It would be better to
subtitute both...

It seems Callum and Jeremy (The new owners of Raw) need chasing lots, they seem to be more concerned with updating the website, getting the new
Phoenix demo up and running and attending shows etc etc.
They are on christmas break at the mo so maybe try them tomorrow. At some point they will want to start making some money rather than just
'playing' with their new toy.
I will certainly be hounding them for my Kit that should have been with me in June under the previous owners and was promised by the new guys back in
October.

When you ring Berrisford, make sure you are sitting down when you ask for the price!

another problem: according to my mechanic the CV joint cannot be separated from the halfshaft itself
can you confirm that this is effectively true for the sierra halfshafts?

The drive shafts can be dismantled by very carefully removing the metal shroud(cover) from the driveshaft stub(not strictly a C.V. joint) New covers
may be difficult to get hold of ? so it makes sense to reuse the old ones if possible. Once the covers have been removed take off the circlip and
remove the inner section of the joint making note of the correct alinment of the joints at each end of the shaft. Reassmbly is just reversing the
process

hi folks, it seems that all the service manual pdf's downloadable from internet are lacking the chapter from 5 to 9...and the instructions how
to disassemble the shafts should be in chapter 9....
can anyone post the pages here? (both for push in and lobro type..)

hi,
I feel for you as i did exactly the same on my striker two days before going to the ring. See my link below. One sheared completly the other had
cracked paint along the join.
I strongly advice not to try and fully dismantle the half shaft from the hub end. Its a sealed unit that is hard to get open and not needed to be done
for the repair
When mine went i got both shafts off and took then to my local gearbox and drive chain specialist. They seemed very good and charged 70 quid to
sleeve, pin and weld my broken shaft. Even checked the balance and sprayed it for me! They checked the other and said that although it had cracked the
paint it is fine.
I suggest you get to your local gearbox and drive train specialist and get them to do the same. This company i luckly found was very good. U2u me if
you want their website. I will defo be sending my other shaft their.
As a further note i dont think mine was the first to snap and i dont think yours will be the last. They seem a little weak and dont like standing
starts!
I hope that helps. Any other help i can give, give me a u2u.

Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

I agree with Bi22le Raw are not the best for drive shafts, my brother has a striker with the subaru diff in and he has just snapped a drive shaft at a
track day. Turns out they just butt welded it and also it was not true so out of ballance. He also sourced someone local to use and has had them
rebuilt.
After reading this I think I will be out in the garage chacking mine
