Brake research
Good evening all,
Some of you might be sick of hearing about my brake issues, but hopefully most will find my R&D useful.
As no one could really say if 300mm discs with Brembo four pots would fit under 15" wheels I bought a Zetec S fiesta wheel and have done some
trials. Well, using a modified Fiat coupe (305mm) I have clear evidence it won't fit, I don't think any offset would, the calliper fouls
the inner part of the alloy on the front face of the Brembo. Shame really as I reckon pug 406 Coupe 305mm discs would have bolted straight on to the
backs of the cortina hubs....
So, next steps.
The above photo is a cardboard 282mm disc, and the fiesta wheel again. This does seem to fit, it is tight mind! Only a few mm to spare.
See card disc.
I am planning on trying a 2.2 406 coupe disc, this is 283mm x 26mm and has a hight of 28mm, meaning it has almost no offset and should bolt straight
on the back of the cortina hub...... Well that's the theory.
Interestingly I also bought an RS2000 wheel and it does not clear the calliper, so spoke design is a key consideration when building brake set ups.
Cheers, Rob

Hi,
Always interesting to see someone trying something new.
If there is remaining space between the caliper and the 'bell' why not just turn down the OD of a 300mm disc until you have a diameter
that works?
Is there any reason why you cannot reduce the diameter by turning? In my early bike racing days we made our own discs by turning down road bike discs
on the OD and reducing the thickness on the lathe at work.

You can increase barking efficiency by just using a bigger disc with the same caliper.

that was a pretty obvious result tbh . the 20vt coupe runs 16inch wheels as standard from what i remember the coupe wheels are pretty light if
you fancy re drilling your hubs to 4x98 pcd
i have fitted the coupe brembos to a bravo and a cinquecento and have never got away with less than 16inch wheels. oz supaleagas were the best that i
found for rear spoke clearance.
its a very heavy setup do you really need 300mm vented discs? if you do it would be worth getting split discs with ali bells to cut the weight down.
on the bravo i noticed a difference in handling from the added weight. i think it would be even more noticeable on a light weight car.

Or you can get a bigger dog!

ASHG,
I am not really sure it was obvious actually, hence why no one on the forum could actually say with proof either way, if you do the numbers a
15" wheel could well have a disc up to around 381mm, you would not fit a caliper to it like! I appricated input from one of our members with the
pug 106 running the same calipers and 283mm 206 GTi 180 discs, this was very helpful. If you look in his photos you can see there is still a little
gap, and that is why ive looked into the 300mm disc....
FYI - My Celica GTfour ran 315mm discs with 16s and those calipers were well 'chunky' and there was still a bit of clearance on them, so
hence the reason i have gone to the trouble of trying out the different combinations and so if others wanted to use big discs they could learn from my
work.
I think you could deffinatly turn them down, thanks for the idea, but the bell part of the disc on the coupe is still all wrong for fitting to the
back of the Cortina disc.
Cheers, Rob

On the Fiat Coupe 20VT, only the OEM 16" alloys fit over the callipers, pretty much no aftermarket 16" will fit, and quite a lot of
17" rims have clearance problems as well.
