welding axle
investigating an oil leak on my axle i found the cause was a cracked weld where the pannard rod bracket is welded to the axle.
not what i wanted when i've a busy week and a trackday at croft on saturday.
i can easily get to it in situ to weld it but how far should i go in stripping the axle?
i was going to remove the half shaft.
is there any need to remove the diff? i was thinking not as it is a fair way from the bracket.
was also thinking of jacking the car up only on the drivers side then the diff oil wouldn't be anywhere near the weld.
finally would my 100amp mig do the job or am i going to have to go and borrow my dads welder again.
cheers

I welded my brackets on with a 100amp mig and didn't drop the oil or strip anything.

The half shaft will not get hot enough to affect it, do as you suggest jack up to flow all the oil away, clean and gring a V into the crack then weld,
max current 0.6mm wire

welding
my main advice is the clean the area where you will weld as well as possible, oil and welding are not friends. get some degreaser, clean thoroughly,
and as above, grind the area to fresh metal before attempting to weld.

As part of the prep you need to drill holes at the sharp ends of the crack to act as crack arrestors.
