Tightness in Steering
Hi Guys,
A bit of a story here but basically I've had issue with tightness in the steering, so tonight I decided to try and locate where it was, and to
my surprise it turned out to be in the top part of the steering column (Sierra column BTW). I decided to dismantle it and see what was going on, and
noticed that the outer column was rubbing on the steering wheel boss, hmm I thought, I'll give that a little file and that should do it........
Some time later after some filing I re-assembled the column, but no joy, still tight, so time to investigate further. I could a little movement in
the column that suggested wear in the column bearing's but these very rarely wear and didn’t explain why it was tight. Anyway after hours of
pondering I decided to do the unthinkable and look at the manual, and instantly I noticed a problem, the top thrust washer was not where it should be,
it was under the top bearing rather than on top of it! So I moved the thrust washer to where I think it should be, and now it turns sweet.
BTW Could anyone who has a sierra Haynes manual have a look at the diagram at the bottom of page 11.15 it show the thrust washer in the top and
bottom of the assembly, but the diagram has them orientated the same way surely the top one should be the other way up to fit into the upper bearing,
the same way as the bottom one fits into the lower bearing.
Cheer
Scott
