Disappearing reverse - help......

The Fiat 131 box with remote Abarth gear lever in the F27 has been notchy between 1st into 2nd then down from 3rd into 2nd for some time.
The box was new/old stock when I bought it and had only done "a couple" of rallys in the vendor's Fiat 124 rally car(!).
Today it doesn't seem to like reverse.
It will just about engage but spits itself out as soon as any load is applied.
Forward gears other than the above notchiness seem OK.
Since gearboxes have always been a bit of a mystery to me does anyone have any useful suggestions please?
At this stage with a week to go to the Car Limits Driving Day I don't really want to take the box out - requires engine out as well - so hopefully someone can suggest areas to look at.
Thanks in advance, Pewe

Sounds like you need to adjust the clutch a bit, dragging clutch will give exactly the symptoms you describe - very quick and free remedy

If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

If you push the gear lever into reverse as you try to take off (i.e. keep pushing the gear knob), does it stay in?

Are all the other gears okay?

Can you select reverse with the engine off then start up with the clutch pressed? As Mark says it sounds like a clutch problem.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Many years go I used to drive a 131 and had slight problems selecting gears and then lost two completely. It turned out to be play in the gear lever linkage (in that case a plastic collar at the bottom of the gear lever) - are you sure there is no excess play in you linkage anywhere?

My old Supermirafiori didn't have any linkages, the lever came straight out of the gearbox.

Are you sure you are getting full gear lever movement and there is no restriction from the lever hitting the tunnel top hole stopping it from going fully into gear?

Thanks for the replies, guys - much appreciated.
Have since taken the remote off and the pivots all look OK
I'll try the clutch adjustment next session in the garage - preferable to attacking the box.
I remembered I'd a 131 Haynes and looking at it if it isn't clutch related it's going to be the retaining bolt on the reverse selector and that's buried in the bottom of the box!

The plot thickens......
Adjusted the clutch which needed doing but to no effect.
However mentioned it to No1 son as he'd been out in it the weekend before giving the girlfriend a ride.
"I did try to engage reverse when going down from 5th to 4th - do you think that could had done some damage?" - too bl**dy right it could!!
I don't know you lend the kidults your pride and joy and what do they do?
Based on their performance so far this year from now on No1 is going to be called "Trash" and No2 "Crash".
Think I'll drain the oil out and if teeth appear it's engine and box out plus cancel Sunday's driving day, if not then I think I can safely assume it's a bent selector - wish me luck.
Cheers, Pewe

Solved the problem - well I think I have.
Despite chassis rails in very close proximity managed to wiggle the rear casing off the box enough to expose the idler gear on reverse at the bottom of the box. Talk about stripped!!
Using finger-tips and lots of expletives removed it - not easy as the selector fork runs on a parallel shaft at the top of the box so gear and selector have to come off simultaneously. Fortunately have another g/box in stock and whilst it's idler gear ain't perfic it's a bl**dy sight better than the current one.
So same procedure in reverse and lots of Wellseal on the faces - now just need to flush the box out, refill and hopefully jobs a good 'un.
Oh and discovered the Rotaflex coupling on the back of the box is knackered and they're about as rare as hen's teeth!
Still now having the car up in the air will at least it'll give me the opportunity of putting in the higher ratio diff I bought ages ago.
Cheers, Pewe.
