Play in Ford English axle

My car (Locost, 1300 xflow, english axle)has no windscreen so I always use a helmet, however this summer I have done a few short journeys without and have noticed a clunk as I let the clutch out and set off. I had a poke around expecting to find loose bolts or worn bushes but all seems fine. When one wheel is jacked up and the car is in gear the wheel can be rotated a few cm and this is accompanied by a similar (or identical) clunk. This may have always been going on but I didn't notice because of the helmet or it may be a distressing new development.
My question is ... - is it normal?
Thanks in advance.
Dave
