how long front coil overs

i have built a mcsorly 442 and have tried to fit some 14" long spax coil overs on the front end i have found them to be to long
no matter where i put the brackets
what length has anyone else used for the front shocks
i am thinking about buying some 13" long coil overs and i want to be sure they will be right before i buy them

many are 12 inches long. Does the +442 include 2 inches height? 13 should fit ok. Then again, so should 14...! are you running full sierra width?

have you got adjustable spring platforms on them ???

Can you fit shorter springs, wind up the platforms and get them in that way ??

One of the recomendations on my set up was shorter springs, not to lower the car but wind up the platforms as the i have around 4" thread available to do this, thus use shorter springs, less weight.

just a thought, may not be poss in yr case.

coil overs

yes the 442 is 2" higher my car is pluss 4 width with standard whisbones so its not quite full sierra width at the front altho the chassis is higher its also wider where the shocks mount so it might end up needing the standard length shocks i hope this is the case coz doz do some at the right price but only 12" ones if i need 13" i will be looking at nearly double the cost
the problem with the 14" shocks is when the car goes into full droop the shocks still have some travel left when the top ball joint (tranny) reaches its limit so i am worried that it could break the top ball joint ummmm?
if i move the bottom shocker bracket closer to the maxi ball joint to solve this problem the spring fouls the top whisbone
its the total travel thats causing the problem

i know where you are coming from dave. I assembled mine without the springs on in the beginning, and moved it thru the full travel. I had about 4 inches after id re-angled the lower ball joint (in needs to point inwards a bit IMHO). i then got my shocks (from doz), tightened up the platform to hold them at full extension, and bolted the top the the car, and the bracket to the bottom. i then lifted the lower bone 10mm above its bottom limit, sat it on a stand, and welded the bracket onto the bone. this fortunately also left the bracket very close to the ball joint, which is good for the bending stresses in wishbone.

this should ensure that the joints cannot bottom out at either end.

in your case, i would modify the ball joints angles to give you more free movement in the joints. I suspect its the bottom joint that needs aiming in a bit, with sierra hubs its a fair few degrees in (the taper that is).

edit: just reread yours, looks like its the top one thats the trouble. ah well... how about using a taller bracket on the bottom bone, i used 6x25mm bar on mine, about 2 inches tall.

i am using cortina uprights and yes it is the top ball joint
may be i could use doz 12" shocks and a bigger bracket its a good sugestion joel

well, they look very nice! good price, and thru the single mile ive driven i had no complaints (except the steering wandering cos i forgot to do up the bolts on the column...) cant really blame darren for that though!
