Steering UJ's

Is it ok to use 3 uj's in my steering?

I am having trouble getting the steering shaft past the alternator and can't fit it on the other side of the engine.

If I do this, should all the UJ's be lined up in terms of the orientation?

Cheers

As long as they are proper steering UJ's there should be no problem, and they all should line up properly.

i had the oportunity to drive a couple of westfields back to back on an experience day. one had 3 uj in the steering and the other had 2. the one with 2 had a much better feel and lighter more comfortable steering.

Initially i didn't know this was the case and asked the mechanic why the steering was so much heavier on one of the cars and that was the answer.

Should be OK so long as one of the shaft sections runs through a spherical bearing, attached to the chassis, to constrain the shaft from doing unusual rotations!

The reason for using 3 is I am using an MX5 steering column. It is quite a lot shorter before the first UJ than the sierra one.

The first UJ is before the pedal box. It will be supported with a bearing as it passes through the pedal box and at this point unlike the borrowed picture the shaft will be perfectly straight.

After that it will be very similar to if I was using a Sierra column. I guess the steering feeling won't be affected as the uj will be completely straight.
