JP (sylvia, RAW) MAC1 and other rear upright play solved and upgraded. I think!
Hi all,
Following my original post asking about tolerances in the bolt that connects the rear upright to the lower wish bone here:
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=165582
I have sourced some bolts that seem perfect. I have not had the car on the road and only test fitted them but they look and feel perfect. There is
nothing more than a very tiny bit of movement, alot less than a bush would give but enough to allow the upright to pivot.
I got 1/2" X 11" UNF bolt Type 1 grade from classicnutsandbolts.com (or arun Fastener Company). Total cost for 2 including tax and
delivery was £15.46. He had even guessed it was for a kit car so I think he has supplied a few of these bolts in the past.
I also noticed that one of the internal sleeves that keep the bolt in place had broken its weld and slid to the middle of the upright. This meant that
there was BAGS of play to the point that it had ovaled (SP?!) the end of the upright tube. The rear right must have moved a lot at some point and may
have been during my last track day.
A repair has been done to the upright and the sleeve welded back in place. New bolts to go in on the weekend and I feel a lot more confident that a
geometry set up will be worth the money and improvements in track time HAVE been made this winter.
I know a lot of you have got this exact chassis design and I know that a few people were worried about how to solve it. I thought I would post up my
method and for £16 to help your rear wheels point in the right direction I think this is worth every penny to any serious track goer.
For you guys asking "would that make a difference?" I can only say yes. Considering when I phoned RAW they stated their standard geometry
set up on the rear is 0=>0.25 deg camber, 0deg caster and 2mm=>4mm toe in, I think it needs to have minimal play. The standard set up would
achieve well in excess of these measurements in both directions with no control of the wheel orientation at all!
. . . and this is no dig at any manufacturer.
I hope this helps,
Biz
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!
