I struggled finding an aftermarket boss for an escort.
In the end I bought one for a puma that seems to have the same fitment!

Its a hexagonal shape (20p is pentagonal ), standard on circa 1980s onwards fords. Yes a new boss will solve it. You most likely have an early ford boss which is splined and suits mk1/2 escorts and capris etc.

MK2 - MK6 Fiesta all have the hexagonal column, you can still get MK6 Escort boss kits as well. Just a case of finding a cheap one.

The boss kits should all fit but the only thing that might be different is the locating holes for the auto indicator cancel if that's something that going to affect you.

The price of a puma boss (£60) I might just get a sierra rack that has a splined shaft so it is easier to get a boss plus wheel

I have a Sierra steering column and the steering wheel interface is a hex (not splined).

Adapters are cheap on e-bay though. 200924720543
