How much power can I stuff through a cortina axle?

A friend in blighty has just aquired a donor cortina axle and a rover v8 + manual box, he just rang me up wondering if this was a bad idea to use the rover lump through a cortina axle, and to be honest, I have no idea how much you can poke through a 'tina axle..
Anyway, he's not got a computer and things so I said Id ask here on his behalf.
Is this a BAD idea? is he better off getting a stronger axle to start with, and if so, what has roughly the same track, is in most scrappys and can take the power?
best regards

Depends on the weight of the car, as the weight increases so the traction increases. On a typical locost with road tyres it would almost certainly be ok
