Which tyres?

What tyres do you folks recommend for road and occasional track day use? My current 195/55 15" yoko advan A048 are toast
it's the first time I've bought tyre for the mk so your advice is great. From quick research I'm thinking...
Toyo R1r
Toyo R888 (r888r are expensive!)
Yoko AD08r
Avon zzs
Wet grip is handy but I don't want to sacrifice the dry grip of my A048 too much.

I would add the Nangkang NS2R to the list, they do a 195/50/15 which is almost the same diameter as the 185/55/15. They do three compounds, guess the 120 softest is the one to go for on a light car. no experience of these but they are getting some good press.

I have 205/55/15 rear and 195/55/15 front R1Rs at present do several track days and quite a bit of road miles, wear is good dry grip is good wet grip is ok.

I will be ditching these for Ad048 soft compound shortly for the extra dry grip

Nankang ns2r are a very good alround tyre for both road and track 120 soft compound.

Whats wrong with the A048 you are using?

Don't change what is not broken. I use these on track and damp days. I would not use them on the road due to cost, effort to warm up and the fact i drive like miss daisy on the road.

Personally, driving on the roads with sticky tyres is mad. Your not doing them justice and may never actually appreciate what they can do. Much like using race/hot brake pads or owning a Ferrari in London!

Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

I currently use the R888 and R1R

R1R is good for the road, but overheat too quickly on track I find. I use them as road and wet track day tyres now.

R888 is overkill on the road (not bad, just epxensive wearing them out when not required), brilliant on track. Warm up well and dont tend to overheat, plenty of grip and a nice progressive let go when you push too far (usually)

For the road I will be trying Yoko AD08R next, great price and supposed to be on par with the R1R, we shall see!

Check out oponeo.co.uk for tyres, they sometimes have great offers!

Exactly as above, R1R on the road and I picked up a set of good TSW wheels with part worn 888's for £400. Each fit for purpose, particularly the 888's, amazing grip on track.

Kumho V70A is also worth considering when R888 is taken in account.

Thanks for all of the helpful info guys.

I'm probably narrowed down to R1R or AD08r and I'll probably try and get a whole other set for track with nice sticky tyres.

Doing quite a few miles this summer. We did a 500 mile trip and there was nothing left of my A048 rears so must be just too soft for the road.
Cheapest I can find for R1R - £250
AD08 I can find for £337

What were you doing to them? ...or were they soft compound?

We do 3000mile trips on medium 048's or 888's. First time I took a set of 888 to the wear bar in one trip. Since then there's plenty left when I get back I've done a 3000mile Euro tour, twice and still had enough tread to be legal coming home (though we had a fair few wet days).

I've just put a set of the new R888r on. At Llandow they felt good and more temp consistent than the old ones (that would go off/over heat). The tread pattern is supposed to be better in the wet as well, with more cuts on the inner edge than the old ones plus a groove all the way around.

Over inflated then, these cars run very low pressures.

Khumo V70's are a good call.
