What to look for in upright? <-Newbie Q

I was just browsing Ron Champion's book again, and was wondering why he didn't use the front wheels of the donor car.

He said to look for front uprights from another car. What was wrong with the uprights of the Escort donor?

The reason I ask is that, where I'm from, Escorts are (were) not popular, so I have to scrounge for other parts. What specific characteristics should I be looking for in looking for front uprights/hubs?

Double Wishbone Front Suspension --- the Escort used struts.

The bottom part of a strut can cut off be adpated but it is much easier and better to use parts from a car with double wishbones.

if you look at most of the pictures in peoples archive you will see cortina & sierra uprights, cortina are best, sierra need a mod. escorts use struts so they cannot be used, also i think one of the mazda sports cars are ok(rx7 I think) & hyundi stella(same as cortina) be prepared to keep looking & once you find some, dont delay

Sierra use a strut too!!!!!!

It just comes off the upright easier than the Escort one!!!

In fact, a cut down Escort Mk1/2 strut (as used by Sylva in the past on the Striker, among others) is actually much better geometrically than the Sierra upright, which I personally think is pretty awful for use with double wishbones, due to the severe inset of the top joint position.

As was said above, look for uprights from cars with double wishbone suspension as std, which use easily available joints, and you won't go far wrong, i.e. Cortina (+ point, chassis depth was designed for it!) manta, chevette, viva etc etc. Cortina takes transit/maxi balljoints (transit top and bottom if you like, I have in the past) and the others take sherpa van tie rod joints.

Right! As soon as I saw double wishbone, I did a Homer-Simpson-Slap-In-Forehead-"DOH!"

Okay, off to the surplus stores now (which we call locally "sorplasan" bec. locals prononce "surplus" as "sorplas"... methinks "autojumble" in brit-speak)

the matchbox on a fagbox Lada's have very nice front susspension, easily adapted, they are double wishbone with disc brakes, what more could you want.

Used then several times in the past don't know how many are around these days though, had a garage full at one time every time i passed a scrappy with one in id'e grab em for next too nothing, only 3 bolts to take out and there off.

NS Dev, i used them on the front of specials before everyone started with rose joints and viva/spitfire where getting scarce, could replace a front corner for around a fiver, oh, skoda alloys fit the stud pattern too.

A very good point that Jon! I have ued these on an off roader project that me and a mate built (6wd, 6w steer, independent suspension all round) and they were handy. As you say, not so common now as a few years ago, but then still more common than Vivas! Manta uprights are dead easy to get now (I have about 6 sets stuck to remains of mantas in the garden!)

Edit post.............it was Niva uprights on the off-roader......doh! Looked very similar though, just had a driveshaft in them too!

best bit is you can use the wishbones too, just make brackets to suit, and maybe the steering rack, and there live axle as well,

is this the new donor to have ??

Jon,I thought they had all been repatriated back to Russia.
I used to see hundreds all lined up in Hull docks waiting to go home,hardly see any at all now.

I believe that Ivan Gilmour (procomp eng.) uses the lada axle on the LA Gold 7's?? Certainly used to, think there were some nice ratios as std, probably due to having little power.

I took Fiat/Lancia/lada front uprights.
But it needs different wishbones

Was Hyundai Stellar ever sold in your country ? --- it is an ideal donor rebodied re-engined Cortina.

Only early ones.

They only used the Cortina set up for a couple of years then they went onto McPherson struts in about 1987. Opel Manta fronts look similar.
