Balljoint boots OR why this car is taking years...
Well - it has just taken me the best part of 2 hours to change the boot covers on my Maxi balljoints.
They've never seen the road, but the rubber had perished and cracked. I bought a replacement pair online after my local motor factors decided
they couldn't provide the right size.
If the old ones had not already torn they would have been by the time I got the old spring clip off the bottom, but they came off quickly.
Getting the top spring clip on was easy enough, it just slid onto the taper.
But getting the replacement spring clip onto the *bottom* of the new boots has been an almighty struggle. One eventually popped on by hand, i'm
not really sure how. The second I had to resort to pulling down using pliers on the ends of the clip - which has left it a bit looser than I would
have liked...
Would I really have been better off just using fine cable ties to secure the bottom?

Sorry to hear of your struggles!
This is a job I need to do. Where did you get the boots from?
Cheers,
James

Although fiddly, ive never had an issue with the larger springs
But I did cheat
I cut up an old feeler guage set, and gaffa taped 5 blades on to the metal casing of the ball joint pointing up and over the boot,
slide the spring down the blades to over the rubber groove, and take each blade out one at a time
simples,
Or as ive done in the past, buy some wire locking wire, two wraps round the boot, and a quick twist on the fliers, job done, and quick

A couple of pieces of brake pipe about 75mm slid over the ends of the clips makes fitting them a five second job

If only i'd come on here and posted after 10 minutes of fighting with the damn things!!
James - i got mine from eBay, just listed as Maxi balljoint covers - they were £3.90 from balljointboots - although the fit at the top is not as snug
as I would like it - but I think they will do the job. Thanks to the LCB wisdom above I now expect to hear that you get yours fitted in seconds
