Rear road springs

Hi all
On my Astra Sri I have had to change both rear springs ( broken) the springs fit both ways on the car but which is right
When fitted one end has two coils close together and the other end is more open
So my question is which way do I fit them ? Open coil at the top or bottom
Thanks Graham

I'd go with open at the bottom but I've no idea if that's right or wrong, other than for some reason it looks right/better to me.

As said wider coil at the bottom closer coil at the top makes the spring action more progressive

Thinking about it a bit more, having the lighter open springs at the bottom reduces unsprung weight. The movements at the bottom are far larger and the open end has less mass.
I don't think from a compression point of view, it makes much difference.

1. A Haynes manual should tell you

2. A crafty call to a main dealer or garage

3. Look under the back of the same car in a public car park and see which way they're fitted

4. Do the springs you've bought not come with any fitting instructions (having bought replacement springs myself I know the answer's probably no)

a quick look at an online parts manual, just shows the springs tappered at both ends ;-(
