Stick with Zetec or replace?
After 18 years it looks like I may finally get to work on my Fury again. The poor thing is in a bit of a state.
The question I have is whether to stick with the zetec that's in there or move to something more powerful.
Car currently has a standard 2.0 blacktop on Bike Throttle bodies with Type 9. Going duratec would mean replacing side pods. Is there anything more
modern/powerful that would fit and keep the exhaust on the same side as the zetec?
Already have an Emerald ECU (assuming it still works lol) for ignition/injection control.
Tempted to stay zetec and just swap engine out if needed but curious if there's anything better around nowadays?

Your 2.0l Zetec on bike throttle bodies is probably making about 165hp and a decent amount of torque. I had a similar setup with a silver top 2.0l and
it was an almost ideal amount of power for a fury on the road.
Usual options would be Duratec which you have already covered,Honda K20/K24/F20 but again exhaust on the other size. Mazda Mx5 1.8 has the exhaust on
the correct side and you may be able to upgrade to the 6speed box (tunnel may be pretty tight) but will need a turbo to get more power plus new fuel
system as injection etc.
You could go down the bike engine route but would need diff ratios sorting out.
But whatever you swap I think you are into £3-5k for any significant power increase taking into account you will need new plumbing, new mounts, new
exhaust manifold, rolling road session and if injection a load of extra wiring and a new fuel pump and system.
You could keep the Zetec, put in a better cam, arp rod bolts, HD springs and a light flywheel and push 180-190HP but will need a carb rejet and
rolling road session. Also if you don’t have one already you may be better off getting a long first, semi helical box and/or ATB diff. This route
would be less hassle (basically part for part swaps) whilst keeping the Fury drivable on the road.
Do keep us posted as to what you decide.

This was my basic assumption, also. On Throttle bodies so no rejet, just a drive out with Wideband connected.
If I decide on more power, Zetec turbo still feels like the best route.

Switching exhaust to the drivers side means a lot more heat for you as the driver. I'd be avoiding that.
S2000 is a very tall motor. I know of someone who was trying to make one fit a Fury and it wasn't an easy option. Don't know if he ever
finished it.
MX5 won't give you more power without turbo.
You could go with something like a Dunnel Zetec. There is a Fury on here with one and it's something around 240bhp. Should be an easy upgrade.

I've got a Dunnell zetec, at power bodies,224bhp on dunnells engine Dyno.
In all honesty it's probably a bit too much for the road.
One thing to remember is if you up the power you'll need to look at the great box. I have a BGH E8 box.
If I had another go at it I'd look at SPC ratios.
You could do what Jeff did and super charge it. But don't go 394bhp as he had to go for an expensive gearbox, as it stripped the input shaft on
the type9.
You also have to think about how much power the chassis can take.
I've had added the bar across the back of the top rockers like the bec's and a diagonal from the top of the tunnel to the back of the rocker
on the near side,mirroring the one which forms the pedal box.
Why not make the car lighter to get to power to weight. Could be a fun different route.

Reinforced my suspicion that keeping the zetec and maybe turboing it sounds like the way forward.
If I were to look to make it lighter, I'd be better off starting from scratch I think...

Of course all the popular bike engines have the exhaust on the same side?as your xerec and would save you a load of weight

Very true... But it would be a compromised BEC... Rather start from scratch if going that engine route..

My last one went from 1700 x flow to kawasaki zx9.
My current is 2.0 pinto going to zx1200 r in the winter.
Think about it, think about it again and then do it.
