I guess its good motivation to check everything regularly. From what was said the corrosion may have been visible before it was driven.
not good though

i reckon the previous owner gave it a whack on the front wheel, set the ball rolling. This fella only had it two weeks. Plus it was parked up for some
time before that, maybe long enough for the water to get in and get busy?

Diagnosis at a distance is a dangerous thing, but I think that the pictures are quite telling.
Stress cracks. Any-time Any-place any-where. ( careful examination, IMHO, gives two. Primary and secondary.)
As you said John, a can of worms.

For me the download of the big picture stalled in the last few megs but from the small pics it looked like a brittle fracture --- a
welding/material spec problem rather than a design issue.

Yep that looked about it. It looked like 1/2-3/4 of the tube had a 'polished surface and the rest had the texture of a brittle fracture.
Where-as the bush tube looked like it fractured from excess stress starting at a minor corroded hairline crack( about 3 - 5mm long) IMHO.
First to fail was the rear tube and then the bush tube.
