Steering column position

Firstly I'm finding it hard to get the right position for the steering cloumn without a pair of seats in. I've put boards in raising the seating position about 3 inches, and another board down the back to simulate a seat. Does that seem about right?

I've also extended my footwell by about 3 inches at the top rail.

The problem I'm having is that the entire Sierra column now sits within the footwell, and I've got the column going down between the pedal rather than over as it feels like a better angle. I don't have room between the pedals to fit the top UJ, the one that takes the triangular rod. Would it be ok the cut the triangular rod on the column in half, put a 1/8th inch wall tube between them, then attach the UJ the engine bay side of the footwell.

Another question: Do I need to put more than the two UJ's in the length of the column, the triangular rod ended one at the top end, and the rubber UJ next to the steering column? Or do I need more for a more effective crumple zone.

my steering wheel shaft goes OVER the top of the bulkhead.

Also, seats were one of the first things i bought to enable me to get all the positions right.

Steve is right, get the seats as soon as you can. I've been all through this stuff of trying to sort out positions of pedals, columns etc etc without seats and it is fcuking difficult.
This time, I've done it the right way round and have bought the seats before getting into all that stuff. I'm already getting different results to what I had expected

good decision.

On my car, just angling the front of the seat up 40mm or so improved the seating a lot. A small change like that is hard to emulate when you dont even have seats!

An inch or two wrong and you will have an uncomfortable car!
