all is not lost!!!
the tag might appear rusty in poor light, but if you hold it under a floodlight, it is often visible! remember, you only need to read the last two
digits.
its the top right side of the tag.
failing that, a squirt of wd40 and a quick brush with a tooth brush can help, again with a VERY bright light - and i dont just mean good sunlight, or
inside, i mean with a 100w bulb 12 inches from it, with a bit of twisting to get the shadows right.
also, with the half shafts out it acts like an LSD (both sides tend to turn together), so if you tip it on its side, put a screw into one of the prop
flange holes, turn it till the bar inside is level, you can easily count how many turns on the input shaft are required to make the bar level again

If you still have problems seeing the tag ,try using a piece of emery tape a polish it up , this should then highlight the engraving, also works with
rusted engine numbers

Yep, second that.
Thats what I did.
No matter how rusty the tag, a good rub with some fine emery cloth/paper should highlight the digits sufficiently to read them.

Andy.
