Preferable Donor Vehicles

I have recently purchased the book and researching the estimated cost involved. Really looking forward to getting started.

Living in South Africa it is not always a good idea to to buy internationally recognised vehicles (Ford Escort), being a Land Rover owner I find that spares are almost double the price than those for locally manufactured vehicles of the same size. So what my question is, has anybody used a Datsun (Nissan) 120 as a donor car, and if there are any active members in SA, would it be realistic to offer around R 500.00 to a R 1,000.00 for a really neglected model, or am I just kidding myself?

Any response would be appreciated.
