OT rover 825sld handbrake adjustment

hi all.

Just fitted new discs and pads to an old rover diesel, i expected the handbrake to adjust itself but it is as crap now as it was before. Anyone know how to adjust them?

Cheers!

I had a web page on my old site on the 820 rear brakes but it is long gone.

Rover 800 handabarakes are generally pretty good and self adjust work well so somethings wrong --- first suspect is that the handbrake cable is too tight this prevents the self adjusters operating, slacken the cable right back and make sure the cables aren't seized, then pump the brake pedal several times to run the self-adjusters up.

You can then re-adjust the cable so that the brake is applied fully about 50% up the ratchet-- this ammount of movement is needed to ensure the self adjusters work.

If that dosen't work it then it is possible that you have screwed the caliper pistons so far in that the self adjuster won't work try screwing them out a little so the they just touch the disc when refitted.

Failling that you have knackered calipers -- self adjuster repair kits are available.

Best site for 800 info is Dave Pallants old site it is no longer maintained but still on line at http://www.gaima.co.uk/www.pallant.f2s.com/rover/ />

You will also find a few rover 800 groups on yahoo --- used to be only one but they fell out with eachother.

cheers BT. When i pull the lever up, it goes all the way and but the handbrake doesnt hold the car still properly. Im guessing this means the cables isnt too tight as if it was, it wouldnt come up at all would it? I'll try what you suggest anyway.

I screwed the pistons in a fair distance, but since it didnt work properly before, it was either already buggered or ive left it buggered. The o/s rear disc was badly tapered, with the inside pad completely worn away and the metal backplate half gone too, could this have caused it? Incidentally, its this wheel that did work, the other side looked ok but had absolutely no resistance from the handbrake.

Cheers again!
