Poll: front brake hoses, what to do? [View Results]
1. use rubber hoses with some rubber hose support thingy
2. replace by braided hose
3. fit shorter braided hose to side panel

front brake hoses, what to do?

little while back, I posted piccy of my front brake hoses. These are rubber (OEM) type that go through the side panel via a grommet then turn sharply upwards to a bulkhead fitting.

The bit that concerns me is that the grommet is a loose fit and I reckon may/will eventually pop out of its hole leaving the rubber hose to rub on the ali side panel. :O

This needs sorting, and I see 3 possible solutions, as in the poll, listed in order of cost.

Firstly use the original hoses but somehow ensure the gormmet does not move - this may involve fitting a "washer" with a smaller hole for the gormmet so it is less likely to move. Or fit a bit of rubber hose over the brake hose to give more material to wear before the brake hose itself.

Next is to replace them with braided hose so and fix the grommet maybe be able to more securely; should the gormmet pop out, then the braid will protect the inner hose. But not sure if the hose can be bent in the same radius as rubber so it may end up too short.

Lastly.,and I think the way I've described the 2 other solution, this would be the most sensible way to do it, is to get shorter custom length braided hoses, for that bling factor too!, and have the bulkhead fitting in the side panel. This does away with any rubbing issues but would require another join in the brake line - one more point of failure - and I would need to ensure the hose is neither too short nor too long - any advice on how to measure that?

Will the side panel, held by self-tappers, be rigid enough (so I can use the original hole) or should I look to have some bracket welded to the chassis?

Any other sugggestions/advice appreciated.

I did mine the last way you described - the hose is fixed to the ali skin using a male bulkhead end, reinforced with a couple of big st. steel washers and held with a M10 nut. The rigid brake pipe fixes to the inside with a female nut fitting.

Braided hoses can give a better brake pedal as they are less prone to expanding under pressure. The bling factor is a secondary consideration.

I also think that it is not a good idea to have flexi hoses stressed by turning them sharply so panel mounts are probably more desirable. mine have been ok just mounted on my grp panels with a big washer inside.

Ditto... this is picture of St.Steel braided hose wrapped in convoluted wrap (for SVA) though you can now get clear heat shrink which we have currently got for SVA. Original braided apparently will not pass as it is abrasive (?)

Braided will pass OK - as long as it can't touch anything as it makes a very good file! I put some spiral wrap where my hoses can rest against the brake caliper on full lock.

SVA man had a very good look and said nothing.

The other alternative is to get a different grommet with the same ID. and a Larger OD.
Let me know the size needed and I bung a couple in the post.

thanks for offer. it is about 10 mm ID and 24 OD (need to measure it though) but I am a bit wary now of using grommets. Needto tink is there some way to keep the hose from moving as it passes through the side panel.
