thanks, thats a good link.
it doesnt say that the bullit box was fitted in the capris. If it was bolted onto a 3 litre engine then that would be an essex engine wouldn't
it?
was thinking of getting blueshifts engine and sticking that on it, but suspect it wont fit. the link is here incase anyone fancies comenting or
looking...:

well that puts paid to that then... didnt really want a four speed anyway!
dont really know why i want a new engine when i just spent ages cutting the sump off this one... just seems a waste of effort putting a puny engine in
the overweight beast.
i guess i'll finish it with the 1600 and then go the full hog later.

I’ve a 2.8i V6 Cologne engine with auto box from a 1985 Granada Auto that I want to use in my Eagle. (Basically because I got the Granada for free and
it sounds great!)
As there is no engine breaking on the auto and there are all those hydraulics to sort out so I want to go manual.
I spent days trying to sort out a compatible gearbox, these are my findings:
• Not all bell houses are the same on Fords.
• Yes the Type 9 box (also called N) is compatible but it needs a longer drive shaft.
• The ratios in the boxes do vary (I have some detail on this if anyone is interested.)
• You need a V6 Bell housing which are very rate. (1 in 1000 2.8i Granada’s were manual.)
• Of course you also need a Flywheel etc - which are rarer that the bell housings.
• The Starter Motors are not compatible as the teeth are different.
• You cant find 2.8i Capris in scrap yards either!
If this is wrong please correct me. or anyone can help please do.
Regards
Simon

I would fit if you had the right bellhousing but it's an all iron box and weighs a ton so you're better off going for a Granada/XR4i/late
2.8 Capri type 9 box. Look in my photo archive for the measurements of the input shaft - the four pot boxes are a lot shorter.

Get the gearbox out Ned!! I had real trouble sourcing one a few months back. Seems everyone with a 2.8 Crapi thinks it's worth something!
Simon - which engine have you got? Mine is the 2.8 V6 cologne with mechanical fuel injection, taken from an XR4x4.

Ok chaps here’s where my inexperience shows.
I have just fitted a clutch kit for my first time ever!
So I am quite proud of my self, and not only that I have taken an engine from an automatic Granada and married it up to a Capri 2.8i 5 speed gearbox.
Its all gone together quite simply… too simply!
Can I bore you with the procedure?
I really want to know if I did it correctly, of course I can’t test it for many months as I am early build stages, I only have a rolling chassis so
far.
So I’ve got my 2.8i V6 Cologne engine out of a 85 Granada Auto.
Lost the torque converter and purchased a new clutch kit, intermediate plate and Spigot bearing.
Then I bought a Bell housing, Gearbox, Clutch and Flywheel from an old Capri 2.8i of similar age.
Fitted a spigot bearing
Hung a new intermediate plate in place with a wire tie or 2 whilst I get everything together.
Bolted on a flywheel from a 2.8i Capri (using the excising bolts and lock nut – (torque as per Haynes)
I then gave it a good clean with a new rag.
After greasing the input shaft with the stuff in the kit I fitted a new fitted a release bearing to the arm.
I then cleaned the friction plate bed (sorry don’t know the technical term) on the back plate with white spirit to get rid of the transit oil and the
bloody part number sticker!
I then held the friction plate in place (flat side to the clutch plate) while I loosely fitted the clutch back plate and visually lined it up.
With the aid of my trolley jack I manovered the a Type 9 gearbox off a 2.8i Capri box in place. One jiggle and it all went together a dream.
I carefully removed the gearbox, so as not to miss align anything, and nipped up the bolts – (torque as per Haynes). Again I had to use the original
Capri bolts.
I greased the input shaft spines with that thick grey grease and slid the gearbox assembly back in to place.
Bolted the Bell Housing to the engine - torque as per Haynes.
At the bottom of the bell housing the opposite side to the Starter Motor I used a nut and bolt to clamp the intermediate plate to the bell housing as
the bell housing does not bolt to the engine at this point.
There is some movement in the clutch release arm, until the release bearing hits the clutch spines, then I don’t have enough strength to feel any
movement.
Sorry to send you chaps to sleep, but this is all new to me and I am looking for some reassurance.
Now can I use the original starter motor of the Granada?
Thanks for taking the time to read this,
Simon

i got bored and didnt read it all but......
the key bit seems not to be the splines looking like they fitted ----- its the dowel on the end of the shaft that has to engage with the hole in the
flywheel centre. if it doesnt the bearings will fail in no time.
congrats btw
