Rebuilding 4x4 rear callipers

Right, my rear callipers are in a right state so I want to clean them up and paint them. Presumably to do this properly I need to dismantle them which I guess will mean I need a new seal kit.

A couple of people have recently said this is really hard to do because of the handbrake mechanism.

Is the difficulty just because really you need the special tool (as mentioned in Haynes) or is just that it's *impossible* without the tool and bloody hard with it?

The chap at Brakes International said that it's just that you need a pair of really long circlip pliers.

A rebuild kit from them is £9 per corner and a new (exchange) calliper is £46 so you can see why I'm interested in doing it myself!

Or shall I just save a load of grief and not bother!

Thanks,

James

Probably the worst caliper to overhaul thats why they cost three times as much to have done compared to the fronts. £46 each is a pretty good price, if i was you i would go with that option.

bugger.

anyone know of an online rebuild guide or horror story so I can think about what's involved?

I was going to overhaul mine. On stripping the first one I discovered that the piston was corroded, I could not source replacement pistons so part exchanged the seal kit for a set of replacement callipers. Cost me £60 a side.

Brakes International 01706 666999
main website:
http://www.brakesint.com

catalog site:
http://www.brakepart.co.uk you need to register just to browse it though.

Absolutely brilliant place that's a true Barry Bargain. I've phoned 5 different places for the discs, pads etc. that I'm after and this place has beaten them all. I don't know what makes they sell but the website has all the well known ones.

The callipers are £46 (per corner) with a £30 surcharge until they get your old ones for the rears. Also £25 (plus a surcharge I guess) for the fronts.

If you order by phone then make sure you get your rear Sierra pads for the web price (£6.95!!! ) as opposed to the catalog price which is a little higher.

Think I'll order mine today. Chris, you gonna order front callipers too?

Cheers,

James

Hmmm,

well , just spent £315!!! Credit cards do make it easy to spend money don't they!
Atleast that's new pads, discs and callipers all round.

Atleast I'll get £94 back when I send off my callipers.

Problem is, that only leaves me ~£31 to build the rest of the car.

And I'm gonna go buy new gaiters now aswell!

Ooh. I didn't find their online catalogue site, just some other corporate site, so I emailed them. Guess what: they have the elusive Cortina caliper O-rings!

From their email:
quote:

The M16 caliper repair kits are available but do not contain the 'o' ring
that you require but we do have some of those at a massive 80p each and you
will need 1 per caliper. The bolts we do not have as they are a special
tensile bolt which the tensile strength is marked on the top of the bolt
that is already in the caliper. We can also supply re-con calipers at ?31.56
each exchange to save you getting your hands dirty

wheeee!

Holy cack! That's quite cool.
They didn't say however whether we needed replacement bolts of not. I've heard different people say different things about this.

Question: do the princess 4 pots just bolt straight onto cortina uprights with solid disks without any mods or spacers at all?

James! It's meant to be Locost! However I will let you off since you've got a really bizarre chassis

I'm glad I got the job of reconning the M16s and not the sierra rears.

Another question: What master cylinder is best to use and where can I get a recon kit for it?

-Mackie - still with sevaral grand to go in his credit card. For now.

Blueshift,

I'm pretty sure you can get the M16 rebuild kits from Darren of dozracing and atleast he's a fellow builder!

http://www.gtscougar.freeserve.co.uk/brakes.htm
No connection!

Also, if you want new bolts then try these guys:
http://www.ahc-camberley.co.uk/

Best nut and bolt shop I've found. So far they've sold me CV joint bolts for back end, 24cm long bolts for IRS, 7/16th UNF for seatbelts and M12 stuff for wishbone bolts. All in stock and at Barry Bargain prices!

Cheers,

James

Mackie,

Can you not use the m/c from your Sierra? As far as I know any twin cylinder one will do.
As opposed to re-building it tho I'd have thought you could buy one at a show for not much money.
Paul Bayer bought his from some stall that's at every show for about £10 and it was boxed and new looking.

If you're feeling flush you could of course go to Luego and buy their twin master cylinder setup!

Oops looks like we're nearly having the same conversation in two threads

I would buy from darren but I couldn't resist the cheapness of brakes international, plus they had the rare lesser spotted O-rings.

I will check out that fastener site.. Don't suppose you know any part numbers for the cortina caliper bolts do you?

Chairs,

By the way all, I have since been monkeying around dismantling our calipers and it can be done (with some fiddling)

I used a draper two-leg puller and a deep 19mm socket to compress the caliper spring (doing with the adjuster nut as per haynes was too stiff, wouldn't move) then a pair of screwfix miniature circlip pliers from their set of four..

got pics of this, will put them up at some point.. yell if you want a link

James,

Our Sierra has a gone and it had ABS so the master cylinder wasn't suitable. If they can be picked up for that little than that sounds good.
No rush afterall!
