Brake pipes
I'm about to order some flexible brake pipes for my little toy, abd I have a quick question...
My flexibles will be fastened onto the bodywork at the front, so I want to make sure that the pipes won't be too long - so what pipes should I ask
for? Will asking for an 'Escort Mk2' set give me sensible length pipes?
All suggestions welcome?

Oh - another question - are Escort Mk2 fittings all 10mm metric?

Hi David,
Yes, Mk2 fittings were M10x1 (i.e. not the standard pitch: M10x1.25).
Recommended M10 tightening torques:
Male pipe nut: 9 - 11 Nm
Female pipe nut: 11 - 13.5 Nm
Bleed screw: 5.5 - 7 Nm
Hose End: 10 - 12 Nm
(From old Girling service bulletin).

Looks to me, on my car with sierra bits, that the brake pipes (flexy) are way too short.
I am still looking for a place to buy ordinary, not poncy chromed or pink or blue ones, flexy pipes made to length.
failing that I will make a short joint peice that will fix to the wishbones. bear in mind mine are covered, or will be, when i do my front section.

Probably the best quality pipes around, will make to measure, can supply in pretty colours or plain, all sorts of end fittings.
Just take your payment to Silverstone in a wheelbarrow...

OK - now I know that Escort Mk2 pipes have the correct fittings for my car, and I now know how hard to tighten them (thanks, Dick!).
Now can anyone comment on whether the length is good for a fairly standard Locost?

Thanks David.
However, the cost of one of their fittings seems to be about the same as buying a complete sierra hose! So i will ask them, and at the same time
persue my other idea!
Wont you be able to measure the lenght once you have the wheel and stuff on the car? Or are you working a bit too far ahead of yourself! I cant give a
lenght for mine as you know its not exactly standard.

Buggerit! 
I decided that I would use the Merlin service - they quoted me around £12 - £13 per hose, which doesn't make it much more expensive than ready-mades
of that quality.
However, when I try with an old rubber hose I can't get any setup where the hose doesn't end up touching something on one lock or the other.
How the h*ll have people arranged their hoses? Any good pictures I can look at and blatently copy?
Until I get the hoses fitted, I can't complete my hard brake pipes, and therefore can't put my engine and gearbox in. Argg!

Actually, my order was exactly opposite what you are going to do - enigne first, then brake pipes, and still not put in front flexys.
If Merlin are that cheap i will definatly give it a go!
Perhaps there are pics of show cars somewhere, or you could go to the next show and see?
On my car, i think some kinda attatchment half way along the pipe will be needed to hold it to the wishbone, as there is quite a lot of movement to go
from side of car to hub, and go through full lock. I would suggest that you loosely attratch it close to the top 'bone at some place. Im guessing,
but i think my hoses might be 400mm - 500mm long when i get them and thats going to be a bit floppy if not supported at all.
Cable tied to the top bones?

Just a thought but the last time I changed the flexi pipes on my ZX9 I bought a kit from a company called Hi-Level in Doncaster, can't remember the
phone number but any bike shop should be able to get you one. Only cost £45 and came with heaps of SS hose and fittings. I still have enough left over
to do my car.

The man at Merlin said "£5.75 per end fitting (metric bulkhead type) in plated steel, £11.75 each in stainless, plus whatever amount of hose you use
at around £6 per metre". No charge for making them up, usually same day making and shipping. Seemed fair to me!
As for looking at a show, I had a good nose around at Newark but neglected to take pictures (I reckon my brain was still numb from the Isonblade
).

I am trying to get the brake pipes sorted. The longest I could find were off a Pug 206, but they arn't long enough.
Surely there is a std donor out there for these pipes!!

I got mine from Rally Design.
Made up specially for me, Stainless braided. Worked out at £8.50 each! Now you can't complain at that! A rubber one must be a fiver!

They are very helpful, cheep and have heard of and are used to kit cars. Spoke to them on thier stand at Autosport today about bushes for engine
mounts, and the gut said if I work out roughly what size I want and phone them up they will look through them all until they find one that will fit!
Now that is service for a pair of polybushes!
