really stupid steering question

Hi all

I've sussed out my front wheels now so at least they're point in the same direction

On my car the tie rods once disconnected from the hubs won't clear the inside of the wheel for adjustment without moving the wheel out as if turning, and the rod ends can't be rotated in situ as there isn't enough room between the wheel and the hub.

Would I be correct that if I remove the clip on the steering rack boot, I should be able to hold the tie rod end steady and turn the tie rod as it will free turn allowing adjustment without moving the wheels?

Or as usual have I got it completely wrong? if so will I need to keep moving the rod out from inside the wheel, wind it in or out a bit and keep offering it up and realign the wheel each time?

I've never stripped a rack done so it's a bit of a mystery and the Haynes diagram of a rack isn't particularly clear.

Any help much apprecited as it looks with the weather as if this is the job for the weekend.

Thanks all
Nigel

No need to disconnect anything --- back off the lock nut on the track rod end and turn track rod too adjiusr -- most have flats for a spanner or just turn it with mole grips.

Usually the clip on rubber boot is slack enough for the track rod to turn -- if not slacken the clip.

Remember to tighten up the lock nut when finished.

thanks

So if I have tie rod extensions fitted I simply keep the extension and tie rod end still and rotate the tie rod itself?

Just want to make sure as I have nightmares when playing with stuff I don't fully understand that something will snap or fall apart

Thanks
nigel

That is correct...

Hold track rod end and extender still...(TRE and extender should be locked together anyway)...

And then turn the track rod...You shouldnt need to unclip the boot....
