Fiat rack
Some of you are using a Fiat rack, which one, is mounting easier and what is the rack length?

In the car i am designing, hoping to use a Fiat Cinq rack which is in my garage. Just hoping not to have to buy a custom made one.
But depends on what you are building, its width, and where your wishbone pick up points, as this would affect your bump steer etc.
I can measure the length for you later if you would like, and try and get you where the arms pivot.

thats quite a fast rack too, with a lot of travel or at least it was on the little fiat

I have the suspension all worked out just looking for rack options.
Sierra much too wide, Escort four inches wider than ideal.

Someone may correct me, but i don't think you can just drop any steering rack in, due to bump steer etc.
If you have got your suspension mounting points, then i think it would be best to have a custom made rack.
Or alter an existing rack to make it suit, cut the ends down, may need to re thread the ends, rose joints etc.

I think MArtin Keenan used a fiat rack on the Sprint R which was a single seater may be worth dropping him a line he also made front uprights to suit
the rack. I am aware that a lot of time was put into getting the geometry corect

The Sprint R does use the Fiat rack as I do also on the Furore, it is the only commonly available small rack out there, at least as far as i could
find.
You can use the one from Seicento or Cinquecento they are the same.
I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator
headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names
furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours.

I know that you can't just drop in a rack. My geometry is set, the rack will either increase/decrease the track.

Will have to look for Punto rack dimensions.
The front suspension of a standard Locost does not follow the usual design ideas.
The rack ball joints should be on a line drawn between the upper and lower wishbone pivot centres.
Using this the correct rack width should be 473mm whereas an escort rack is 580mm!!

Perhaps I am missing something, but if you use a cinq, sink or punto rack with sierra or cortina uprights, you will get reverse steering, ie you turn
the wheel to the right and the car turns left, and vice versa.
Whist you may get superior bump steer characteristics and geometry, it may take a little getting used to.
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

..but then all the rack oil is in the 'top' rather than the bottom - does it make any difference. You would also need a LHD rack

A point a lot miss is that if the steering arms have ackerman it has an effect on the ideal rack width.
