I remember there being quite a lot of talk about this on some of the really early posts on the Yahoo Locost group. So maybe have a look there.
I seem to remember there were a couple of bikes that might be suitable (and available from the scrappie) but most have the wrong amount of travel or are too soft etc.

Rising rate linkages

Why not grab a monoshock from the rear of a more modern bike, and grab the rising rate linkage rocker etc with it.
The ones on kawasaki gpx600r's are quite cheap and easy to get hold of, and only require a single pivot on the frame.
They connect to the swing arm with two pivots, which could quite as easily be connecting to the top wishbone, this could put the rocker pivot inboard, along with the spring.
This will give you a rising rate to the shock spring, by dint of the way the angle changes on the shock rockers.
I havent worked out all the angles or anything, its just a idea I had a while back, it is a complex way of implementing suspension though...

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!
