Poll: Quick rack

I have an escort rack, and an 11" steering wheel and need a quick rack.

What ratio would people suggest?

THanks
Lars

Not sure it would make much difference except the lower number of turns of the steering wheel would make the steering slightly heavier.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Mine had a 2.7 turns lock to lock quick rack with a 12" wheel and it was fine. The difference between a 2.4 and 2.5 is hardly any at all.

i never drove with a quick rack but i always needed one. When the back end goes you need to quickly respond to it, i found on track i couldnt wind the opposite lock on fast enough with a standard rack.

So, my approach would be as quick as possible!

does depend on both the width of the tyres you run and if your doing a lot of town driving. Low speed maneuvers can be a killer trying to turn the steering wheel with too quick a rack

Isn't motorway cruising a bit exciting with a quick rack? Light cars can be a bit skittish already, always suspected that would be aggravated by going quick rack...

You get used too it. Driven mine to the Ring and back on several occasions with a quick rack (2.2) just need to be on your toes.

I have just fitted a QR to my Plastic car. I bought a "quick rack" off someone from here but it turned out to be a normal rack. So I bought a reconditioned 2.4 for £72.50 delivered.
With the the standard rack, driving the car was a bit of a handful as it was tricky to negotiate fat legs whilst wrestling a lock-to-lock situation!! With the 2.4 fitted, Curborough in the wet was exceedingly fun! The steering is noticeably heavier but it has transformed the car!

I have a normal rack at the moment, and I think the quick rack is a must.

Just not sure about the ratio, Rally Design to a brand new rack (escort mk2) ratio of 2.4, which is tempting.

Or I could get a kit for 2.2.

What will the difference be between, 2.2 and 2.4? Heavier steering, etc?

I have a 2.4 rack from Rally Design, which is fine as the self-centring and toe-in are set up correctly. It is quick enough to catch the tail if it goes, but not so bad that the steering is too heavy to use.

You do have to pay attention though - if you mind wanders, so does the car!

id say that with correct castor then wandering shouldnt be such a problem.

It's not a problem - it's more a case of "where you look is where you go!"

im exactly the same!

also ive got a quick rack and although it has it good points, i find it makes the car very skitty at higher speed on say coutry road where when you hit a bump and your arms move a little, the car nearly changes lanes

does anyone have a guide on how to replace a rack and pinion in a steering rack?

I have looked all over the net/forum, but could not find one.

Or is it a really straight forward job that just does not require a set of instructions?

Lars,

It is trivial.

I have a spare (junk) rack that you can have to play with if you wish. I don't want it.

Personaly I've found a 2.9 to be a good road rack but a little too slow on track if you are chucking it around deliberately. When I had a 2.4 in there I had no problems playing on track with cheap tyres so lots of tail sliding all day.

Hi

You have to be careful when trying to fit a quick rack kit as to exactly what kit and rack body you have.

If it is a genuine Ford rack Ie has the plate with two bolts on the top where you adjust the mesh of the rack and pinion then you need a Quaife kit.

If it's the aftermarket rack with a round plastic bung as the adjustment of the R&P then you need the kits that fit those rack bodies.

The kits do not swap over from one design of body to the other.

Personally i would fit a 2.4 ratio for road and track use. And a 2.2 for pure track use.

Cheers Matt

Lars, i have a 2.4 rack fitted, much better than standard. Why not pop over and give it a try?

What cheeky bugger sold you a quick rack that was a std one....that's a bit off and not the sort of thing that should happen on here!!!

I'd second that exact quote!

2.4 seems a nice mix of easy enough to park but quick enough to catch when playing

Hi

Re the std racks sold as high ratio ones.

There was confusion for some of the non techie people who where selling racks that could not understand the difference between the racks whith lock stops that restricted the amount of travel the rack had. And the actual ratio of how fast it traveled per input. They simply assumed that a rack that only traveled 2.4 turn must be a quick rack. Some companies where making innocent mistakes.
However some where buying STD racks at £16 fitting a couple of cheap plastic lock stops then selling them as and charging the going rate for genuine quick racks.

There's also the QH quick rack that Westfield use and sell. Again its a combo of restricted travel and only a small increase in actual ratio. Although they are perfectly honest about that rack as it's there standard fitment. But as people upgrade they are out and about on the SH market.

Cheers Matt
