Drippy diff
I've got a sierra lsd in the back of the Stylus. I had to cut off the top mount on the cover plate 'cos it fouled the dedion tube, however
I cut off a bit too much and left a hole.
Initially I covered it with JB weld. I noticed since my dyno session oil dripping from the bottom of the diff, not a lot, but enough to spray up on
the back of the car.
So I removed the JB weld, cleaned it all up an siliconed a bit of ali sheet on it. No difference, still oil all over the back of the diff. I tried to
remove the whole back plate, but those idiots at Ford decided to put it on with star drive bolts that will not budge even with an airgun on them in
the car, so to remove it I will have to take the whole thing out.
Anyway, I've also just screwed a self tapper into the breather at the top incase it's coming from there, and it's still dripping
oil, and I've no idea where from, but it does seem to be from the back cover area, not where the drive shafts come out.
I've typing this more of a rant than anything else, 'cos I know I've got to get the bloody diff out to sort it properly. I just
don't understand why they fitted star drive bolts with almost no depth to them so you can't get any purchase on them?

+1 Not exactly one of Henry's finest designs is it!
I'm begining to think that the ubiquitous Sierra diff is the weak link in a lot of builds.
Mine leaks from the side seal. As I didn't have time to replace the seal, I extended the breather pipe up to the back of the seats. Then I
just topped it up occasionally using a funnel!
Must order that rebuild kit!
Cheers

++1. Mine seems to be coming somewhere from the seal between the backplate and body near the bottom I think. I just can't seem to find it. I
think it's only when it's warm it's happening.
Just to add. I had the same problem with the star bits until I did a search on hre and found out that I was using the wrong size bit, you
wouldn't have noticed though. I got the right size and they came off real easy. So easy that I tried again on a spare diff I had just in case it
was luck but that one came off easy too.

my last one used to chuck oil out of the breather at the top so extended the breather tube as high up as I could as mike says he has done.
I found that I could get the bolts out easily if I loosened them first with a nice sharp cold chisel and hammer first.
"That thing you're thinking - it wont be that."

Breather should have pipe attached. Don't block the breather pipe though, this will cause the diff to build up air pressure as it warms up
whilst in use.. You will lose more oil if you do..
Also if you cut the diff till it had a hole you will have swaf in the diff this is not a good thing.
You might find the leak is else where anyway i.e. from the drive shaft seals?

Give each star bolt a hefty clout or two with a 2lb hammer before attempting to undo. Worked for me.
Once the rear cover is off you will find there is no gasket so clean up faces, make a gasket or add a thin smear of sealant to the surfaces to
seal.

Cheers chaps - looks like I'll be getting the diff out next week, I've got a spare one with a perfect cover, so I'll just put that
on.
BTW a small lump of JB weld fell into the diff, I presume this will disintegrate quite easily???? Here's hoping
