Skoda Octavia GREENLINE
Had to put my Passat (2.0 TDI 140PS) into the garage yesterday to get a knocking noise looked at which turned out to be a worn ARB drop link at 34k
miles - pretty naff IMHO.
Anyhow, their loan car was a 1.6 TDI Octavia GREENLINE. I can only say I was mightly impressed by the whole car 
Equal or better build quality than the Passat. The seats were a revalation in comfort after the saggy sofas in the Passat. The ride and handling
were very very good (not sports car good, but top notch family saloon good).
But most impressive by far was the economy....I managed 57+ mpg over 100 miles of motorway, A road and town driving. The engine never felt laboured
or strained and OK it wasn't quite as nippy as the Passat, but by no means sluggish to drive.
I will definitely be looking more closely at this engine option when the lease comes up next year on the Passat.

Whats the power/torque like from the skod 1.6 ?

105 bhp and 250 Nm which is the same as the older 1.9 TDI unit fitted in current models.

That's pretty good!
I think diesel technology is really on the up at the moment. We have a 1.3 doblo and a 1.9 (both diesels) at work, the 1.9 only has a slight edge in
performance, hardly noticable.
Downside is the 1.9 is nearly £100 less road tax 
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

i'm on my 2nd Octavia estate...
The best 2 cars ive ever owned.
cheap on fuel, servicing, reliable....etc, etc.

Chap we know with the Octavia (with paddle shift) is so pi**ed off with it, he's told them not to give it back when it has had its third gearbox
(dsg) fitted (in 18 months).

i quite like the look of the superb - g/f on the other hand completely refuses to even consider a skoda due to the badge.

My mums like that.
I like the superb, and I believe you can get one with 4WD and 3.0l V6.

I was more tempted with 4x4 and 160hp diesel.
(turns out i was wrong, its three a3's not two - at least i've got her considering a ford s-max for the alfa replacement in 18 months
time. From her perspective its carry dogs and sprogs when we get them, from my perspective its the above + good tow car and large fold flat load area
)

I had two Octavia's - VRS (Mk1) and a Elegance (Mk2).
Both cars were very likely the best cars I've had... including my M3, Audi A4 etc etc
They dont consistantly beat almost every over car in the Consumer Reviews for nothing. If your spouses cant see past the badge then pay for a worse
more expensive car.... who's the fool?

I've just bought a 1.6 TDI Octavia. So far, I'm delighted with it. Amazing mpg.

When our baby came along, I told my mrs we needed a new saloon type car with a bigger boot.
I also said that I wasn't having a run of the mill car.
After checking out a few sports type ones, I found the VRS.
My mrs loves it, the size of the boot alone pursuaded her. Ideal for baby and all the gumph and also nice to have the extra oomph when needed. Mine is
also chipped so does 0-60 in about 7.5!
Only thing is, being petrol turbo it is a bit bad on fuel. But do us on here really drive for fuel consumption?????
Better not let the mrs see this post though!

Ive got a mk1 Octy VRS remapped, awesome bit of kit. Deffo have another when I come to renew it.

I had a 1.9TDi Passat for 3 years. Hated the thing. More to do with the terrible and overly expensive service from VW. Changed at the beginning of the
year to a Volvo V70 with a tiny 1.6d engine! Its no flyer, but driving normally you never want for more. Cruises at 80mph easily enough, whilst giving
70+ mpg. Combined never drops below 54mpg. Plus everyone thinks I am a copper and pulls in. Highly recommended.

Yea they're great. Got a mate with a chipped VRS, it's fantastic. He wanted to upgrade to a more family friendly car when he started a
family so chopped in his Fabia VRS and went for the bigger brother. Aside from being quick it's also comfy and practical. And, with so many of
them being on the market you can pick a decent one up for good money when compared to an equivalent Audi or BM. I'd deffo consider getting one.

Yup VRS diesel estate 170bhp cant remember the torque, pulls well big enough boot, 6 speed manual box works wonderfully.
Similarly specced Audi A4 estate circa £6k more and the service from the dealers (have had an A3 previously) not a patch on the Skoda garage.
Mrs Stan has Mk V Golf Gti, which is slightly more fun but I get 50 plus at motorway cruising speeds. Also VW dealers bloody awful service in Bristol,
Mrs Stan has found them condesending and try and take advantage of her as a female driver. Last major service I 'SPOKE' to the service
department and they reduced the quote £200 which apparently was in line with a deal they had on the cam belt change that Mrs Stan should have been
offered but wasn't. Similar experience every time Mrs Stan takes the car in then send me in.
Only observation so far is that the larger wheels now fitted to the VRS make the ride a little firmer and jiggily than the Golf's (standard
wheels not the upgrade).
Mrs Stan has no badge snobbery issues luckily

I've often wondered the same thing about this one and the volvo ocean racing one, I'm guessing though that it snow balls as lots of us
were wondering and had a look to see if we could work it out.
