tyres, whats hot - whats not?

Ok so having moved to 13"'s from 14"s I'm looking for rubber I'll be happy with for the next couple of years

Car has not yet been on a track day and I'm not planning on doing any yet

I just want a tyre that will work well with a light ish build, don't mind replacing them every 3 years even

Have tried Semperit Speed comforts in 195/60 r14's and they seemed nice and light when I was comparing tyres in the shop ...however the side walls were very thin and soft qiving a squirmy ride, and I seemed to eat the middles of the treads at an alarming rate suggesting they were overinflated (despite me only having 16 psi in the rears and just over a year of use out of them!) any less pressure and the tyres really were stupidly soggy

I have a set of part worn - but looked like they had been recently fitted and hardly worn in - Champiro BXT's on the 13's at the mo (185/60 r13)
The dates on them are just under 3 years old and they look OK,eg not perished
However they are all horrendously lopsided!
The guy balancing my wheels was pretty horrified - rims all seem to run true but the tyres were all over the place...so it looks like I'm up for a new set of 4 round rubbery things

I have been trying to get quotes on premium brands in 185/60 r13 and so far have had
Yokohama A539's at £60 a pop (local fitters
)
R888's quoted from Camskil at £144 a corner (which will not be happening at that price! was under the impression they were only £50 odd a corner so had a shock when they quoted £576 all in)

What else should I be considering?
Are A539's going to be OK ?

Regards
Rob

Toyo T1R is a cracking 'budget' tyre, picked some (new) 15 inch ones up last year from eBay for £116 delivered

Had Proxes and 539 and they were both ace - Pirelli 6000's are crap and wouldn't ever use them again.

I used them on my TVR when i had it and rated them, i don't particularly like them on the kit it doesn't seem to be heavy enough to work them properly.

Must try harder

T1-R? They are not available for 13" rims.

The Toyo R888 is shown here for £48 (probably +vat)

539's for me.best all rounder i've fitted to the imp,and proper tin top and now on the striker for road use.also had falkens afew years back,a directional tread, was impressed with them for the price, but couldn't say on a light car,and my 8v astra gte ate the fronts in 3000miles.that said it was probably more to do with my age than the tyres at the time!

I think the trick is finding tyres that are soft enough to work on a car half the weight of your average tintop.

I found 539's to be ok in the dry, but tended to lock up far too quickly under braking in the wet on a seven weight car.

Lots of variables involved when comparing tyres though, a bit of a minefield really......

Edited to add that 888's definitely do work - if you can get them for the price shown in the link above I would grab 'em quick....

I've recently had Bridgestone ER300 on the tintop, Great tyre. Unsure what they would be like on the kitcar but excellent for a light tintop.

I have used Marangoni tyres on my tin top with very good results. I found that the walls are quite stiff thus less roll and their grip in the wet is exceptional.

From memory they were not expensive and they did last the mileage.

Hope this helps

on a tintop I rate kumho ku31 ecsta sports or uniroyal rainsports over the toyos or goodyear eagles. For the kit I will be going for r888s due to the weight issue.

You mention changing them every three years? Id be changing them at least that often regardless of wear tbh.
