Worn English Axle handbrake adjuster

Handbrake adjuster for english axle.

Ive got intermittent spongyness in my brakes, which rightly or wrongly, im putting down the handbrake adjust ment mech on the rear drums. If only because its clearly below par, and ive checked a fair bit of the rest of it and rebled etc.

If this something i can pick up from a decent parts place (parkers loughborough) or it it going to be a right pain to try and buy?

When i replaced the wheel cylinders i was able to buy them but it took three attempts to get the right fitting and even then i had to got for a slightly different (smaller) bore. Although i dont think that was a bad thing.

Think in question.
- Looks ok, but serrations in adjuster are somewhat fubar'ed.

They usually don't give any trouble, even when worn. Escort rear brake problems usual problems are down to the handbrake cable being too tight and also the stupid rubber flap thingy on the rod linkage on the left-hand-side.

Best tip is throw away the escort cable and rod and rubber flap and fit a Morris Ital (or late Marina) cable fits straight on and is very easy to shorten. This was a fairly common mod on the Mk1 & Mk2 Escort.

Even if the adjuster is slipping it will cause extra travel but not what I would call spongeyness.
Spongeyness on 1970s Escort and Cortina brakes is ususally down to the M16 front calipers, either a pad sticking in the caliper or a sticking piston in the caliper.

If you have standard rubber flex hoses next time it occurs you can track the problem down by clamping one hose at a time.

As you can see it has the rod and cable, so maybe that mod is worth doing, can i presume to getting a new one if i go down to a decent part place?

I think the front right is sticking a little now too, not noticable before, but ive just been for a drive and its pulling to the right a little and feeling a little warmer.

It is mainly extra throw im feeling i guess, but also a little spongier. Drive with the handbrake most of the way on, and the bit points 2inchs higher (only half an inch of travel) and crisp as a crisp thing.

With this, are the fittings (at wheels and handbrake lever) all the same/simlaur?

Looking on the bay there are two options for the above.

Ie, the cable for 440 vans and the cable for 575 Van? Both also saying there ok for the saloon Seller owdkarbits if the above links die.

Any thoughts on which of the two i want before i jump and buy one.

Dragging up a four year old thread now, but at the time I bought a Morris Ital cable, and its set unused at the back of the garage ever since.

How do I go about making use of it and fitting to my Westfield and Ford English axle?
