rear diff or bearing problem

hi i need help again while driveing my car at the weekend i heard a knocking noise from the osr wheel it only does it when you dip the clutch or take your foot of the gas ,i took it home put it on the ramp had a look and found play in the wheel bearing so i thought ideal time to replace both (what a mission that was) put it back together thinking id cracked the problem but with no joy the play is still there so not to let it beat me i searched further it seemed to be knocking from inside the diff end so i removed the rear diff cover and had a look the play seems to be comeing from the small cogg that the halfshaft plugs into so ive stripped the diff out expecting there to be a bearing at the end of the small cogg bthere is only one on each end off the diffdoes that mean the diff is knackerd its a 3.78 diff dont know what axle it is think its a cortina but not sure it has two void bush holes each end of the diff caseing anyone outthere with the know how

Chances are the diff is knackered, the side gears are generally straight in to the diff housing without bushes or bearings, they don't really rotate much unless you constantly spin one wheel up.

Had exactly the same at MOT time last year with a fury.

It is possible to bore out the housing and bush it but probably not economicaly viable unless it's old/rare.
