TR7 5spd axle
I've just located another TR7 Axle :-)
This one being the 5 spd version, fitted with a claimed rare (!?) 3.45 ratio.
Given my poor knowledge of things Triumph, what are advantages or disadvantages of this ratio, over the typ 3.9? as fitted to the 4 spd version
axle, which is also currently available.
In short.. is this ratio going to prove a problem further along?
Finding it a bit difficult to guess.. as I have neither Engine nor Transmission selected.. yet.
From what I've info been able to glean.. this 5 spd variant is 5 kg's +- heavier.
But allegedly more resistant to abuse than the 4 spd version though.
It currently has a failing/loose wheel bearing, to make it more interesting . Two steps forward.. one step backwards, as usual.

Lower ratio means your in gear speed spread will be longer and you reduce your engine speed at the same road speed in the same gearbox ratio.
Loose wheelbearing shouldn't be that difficult to do, assuming you can get the parts (Rimmer etc)
What engine are you planning on?

No expert on TR7's, but I believe the 5 speed diffs are essentially a rover SDI item, so should be good and strong Thing it available as a 3.9
ratio as well, and a 3.08 and others....

Ahhh. I remember those Rover SDI cars.. their tenure was mercifully brief, if I recall.
Sadly the Axle is a used one, fitted with that ratio, I don't have a choice of ratios .
I understand the effect of 3.54 as opposed to a 3.9.
And No I don't have engine trans narrowed down to anything more than a 1600/ 1800 cc 4 cyl and a 5 spd box, ideally a lightish revy unit. Not
for racing/track uses is all that's certain :-).
Thinking further on this a bit..likely the lighter axle with the 3.9 is the clever choice
A low ratio would only mess up the accelerations from a moderate power train, for the benefit of lower rev/mile touring.
From memory, sevens are uncomfortable tourers at any speeds significantly more than the posted hi way speedlimits.

As mentioned above Rimmers are the experts re reliability etc best to phone up and talk to the TR7 axle man or alternatively the guys at Robsport
I seem to remember TR7 axles were as hard to give away as Westfield clamshell wings!
