Wishbones and handling.

This may sound crackers, but facebooking with the French driver of the Indy in the dvd 'mk indy gsxr vs gt3 vs Z06' I casually enquired whether his car had any specialist setting up, in light of its relative docility in corners and its stable nature, particularly at high speed.

Turns out he had it set up by a Caterham Cup driver who swapped left and right front uppers. I couldn't quite determine if he inverted them too, but the trackday footage from last year, (previously recommended by another poster) shows how his 2003 car impressively skins the GT3 and 'Vette.

The guy can certainly drive and I just casually asked who'd set the car up. Out came the above information.

Anyone else tried anything remotely similar and found it successful?

are the front uppers not identical? and if you were to turn them upstide down (eg putting top rod end further towards front of car) it wouls alter caster greatly i would think.although im no expert

Can't comment on the suspension setup, but the tussle with the porsche shows up the achilles heel of becs on track days, not quick enough to pass on the straights, and then gets held up through the bends......can be very very frustrating, Have suffered this with more mundane tin tops, never mind a GT3.

Lack of speed on the straight isn't particularly a BEC trait though Al, more of a seven style trait I'd say. Bricks aren't particularly aerodynamic.

After watching the vid the car certainly looks stable, he dont seem to be trying that hard or is obuer smooth. Wheel spin and oppo, you know the signs.

The circuit is also very tight and twisty and a BEC could keep up with a GT3 if the speeds stay low.

I dont think the result would be the same on a a long GP track like Silverstone. Also the car in front is only ever as quick as the driver.

I skinned (round the outside) a 500bhp supra out of clearways on to the straight at brands. I dont think for a second my car is quicker than a 500bhp supra at 60mph+ drag, he just was not trying.

Watch a GT3 German driver go round the ring 'trying'. A BEC will have trouble then. Mind you Sornz2 (SP) on here may shoot me down. He is not slow at the ring with his MNR ZX10 BEC.

So I think, get a geometry setup as per MK track settings and get supercar slaying. Thats the aim of the game, go and embarrass some rich boys!

The Indy certainly looks well balanced (better than mine was that's for sure). I'd love to know what speed they're doing at the point where the GT3 pulls away on the straights....80-90mph maybe?

soren has a zx12 in his mnr,on 13" wheels and full roll cage. he does loads of trips to the ring i think. he also does track days with pwl in his mnr f22c which is much quicker on the straights but not under braking or through the bends

ReMan.

No, he bought the car assmbled as standard and complained of a worrisome 'twitchiness at speed' to his Caterham Cup pal who suggested the solution they adopted.

I still can't get my head around how fitting parts cock-eyed made the car handle supremely well.
The way Romauld made the 9 year old car perform was a revelation. Bang per buck, it blew away the more exotic machinery by an order of magnitude.

It goes to show that 'if you get it right' whether by design or pure chance, the effect is the same.

I know 'a little knowlwdge is a dangerous thing' but that's all I have to work with. My thinking is that the wishbone swap altered the geometry of the front suspension setup in such a way as to cure the high speed twitch whilst not appearing to diminish cornering stability.

He's looking to sell and buy himself an XTR2 or a Spire.
