If you mean external differences its pretty easy, the type9 is steel, the MT75 is aluminium with lots of cast "webbing"

Both are 5 speed boxes, the MT75 is lighter (due to aluminium construction) but that means its not a home job if you want to take it apart. The type9 seems much more popular, someone who actually knows WTF they're talking about should be along soon to fill in the (considerable) blanks

The type 9 is very heavy I think it is about threequarters the weight of a bike engine. The MT75 is about 10 or 15 kgs lighter but much more bulky. I have one of each but decided on the type 9 as the MT75 is quite a lot bulkier and the gearlinkage is a type of remote linkage system mounted on a bracket to the box and looks as if it may need to be relocated to fit in the tunnel of a locost. The output shaft is also configered for a bolt on donut and splined front propshaft.

For quick identification when its still in the car, the Type 9 reverse is towards the passenger and up, the MT75 is towards the driver and down. My mate the recovery driver says the Type 9 is bullet proof but the MT75 is still good but can be fragile

i had heard the opposite - that the MT was better!

I dont know what the gearchange looks like, but if you can get it to fit, then why not?

Unless someone here can give you a reason why it dont fit....

The type 9 box is the early type of gearbox originally developed and modified from the four spped box as fitted to mk1 and 2 escorts. As such it does suffer oil feed problems to the main shaft resulting in premature bearing failure. This gearbox is cast steel with a bolt on bell-housing and aluminium tail housing.

The MT75 gearbox is a completely redesigned gearbox to reduce the oil failure problem. It gets its name from manual transmision (MT) and 75mm between the shafts. The gearbox was designed to transmit more torque and power than the type 9 and primarily designed for the cosrwoths. The strip down of the type 9 is easy ( done it many times) whilst the MT75 is impossible without special ford tools.

But the downside is that the MT75 is huge compared to the T9, it has a integral bellhousing so only Ford engines will fit, if you want to have a play with gear ratio's at a later date MT 75 choices are limited and VERY expensive, sorting the prop is a bit of an arse compared to a T9, and finally if you do mash a T9, they are as common as muck. Not to mention the rattle on tickover that seems to come as standard with an MT 75!
Other than that they are a good box.....

Dont just build it.....make it!
