English axle LSD clanging

Hi fellas, after some advice. I bought my kit last year and it hadn't been on the road for over 10 years. Today it passed its MOT and I got the first chance of a proper drive in it. The car drove well and LSD seemed to work well, however after giving it some beans away from some traffic lights when I backed off there was some clanging noises, I thought something had broken off at first and was flapping around! after a few yards the noise stopped, I heard it once more in the trip. When I got to my destination I jacked the car up and checked all the trailing arms, back wheels for play etc all was fine. I can only think it was the diff, I took it for a short blast this evening over a few miles and heard no noises.

Oil was topped up in the diff this morning when the MOT and oil would have been warm when the noises happened (25 miles covered).

Are you using the correct oil with LSD friction modifiers?

From opie oils

Motul 90 PA Lubricant limited slip differential (LSD) Extreme pressure -2 litres
SKU: 00001120
1 £13.32

Very good stuff, it still needs changing when you complete an engine oil change to keep everything tight.

Thanks! I didn't realise it needed different oil!

When the MOT was done they check the diff oil level and said it was very low so I looked up mk2 escort diff oil and bought some EP80W-90 GL-5 and we topped it up

Most English lsd are Salsbury plate type but others exist such as ATB and the old Jack Knight pawl type.
For a Salsburybmall top up with normal hypoid oil is OK but if diff needs a large amount get either the right oil or friction modifier additive..

I had a plate type LSD in a Westfield, and it always sounded like a baccy tin full of nuts and bolts, especially when it was used on the road and when it was not under load. It sounded terrible on overrun. The best oil I found was Castrol B373, which is specifically made for the job. As above the right oil for the job is important. It had a real canning for 2 seasons and never let me down.

That makes me feel a better, at first I thought I'd broken a trailing arm bracket and it was crashing around. Thanks for the advice guys I will change the oil to the correct stuff.

There are if I remember rightly 4 plates per side, so if the pre load is a bit light they do tend to rattle. If it really is constantly rattling really badly it could be the top plate that is dished so that it exerts the pre load pressure as you assemble the LSD has broken. Easy fix , but shed loads of labour getting the diff out and disassembled etc.
