MX5 outer cv joint replacements.....argggggghhhhhh!
Come on guys let me in on the secret. How on earth do you get the little spring far enough in to groove to get it inside the cv joint splines.
I've been struggling for 2 hours i managed to get one in but im still struggling with the other. Whats worse is i know I have to remove and
replace the cvs a bunch more whilst messing about with the shafts.
Any tips before I commit a violent crime.

Can you put the clip into the groove in the CV first and then hammer the shaft in?

I really feel your pain.
Spent 2 hours (yep, thats right) struggling to get a snap ring into a scooby diff. Had pinched the ring from another spare diff. Only to find it was
too thick!
However, when I pulled the snap ring from the other side of the diff I want, it was teh same as teh one I tried. Really odd, and no info anywhere on
teh web. Hair currently being pulled out........
BTW I nade a tool to get the snap ring in, plus used a spare pair of hands.....
tool was a bit of square steel, about 4mm square (actually a bit off an old thule roofbar fixing, pretty hard steel) and used a disc to gut a slot in
at one end at 90 degrees, and at 45 degrees the other. That, plus a pair of small screwdrivers, a decent light, glasses actually on and a custard
cream+cuppa got it done. Knack learnt. Just need to get the correct snap ring.......

You can't really do that as the clip needs to be compressed into the groove in the shaft before going the cv AND there isn't really a
groove in the cv. The spring clip expand slightly once it clears the inside edge of the female splined centre of the CV.
Does anyone have a Haynes manual for the mk1 mx5, how does it say to do it??

My book of lies says the VC joints are non repairable and therefore it,s not worth telling how they come apart.
on other CV,s i have just pushed the wire clip into the groove with a small screwdriver as i pushed the shaft onto the CV,just make sure there is no
crud / grit in the groove.
who cares who wins

I've found a book of lies which also says the same You can buy replacement cvs so it must be possible 
The way you describe is how I managed it the first time. I've had a little idea which I'll try tonight. I'll let you know.

Do you need to fit the spring clip if you are going to dismantle the shaft again? The normal way of fitting the CV joint would be to
use a copper hammer to knock the joint onto the shaft . I can't remember what the shafts are like on the MX5 but from your discription I would
hold the shaft in a vice ,locate the joint onto the splines and give it a sharp tap , there's normally a slight chamfer on the edge of the
female section of the joint. It may help to fit the clip so the ends are hidden by a spline.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions gents. I've sussed it. I placed the joint in the vice and stuck the end of the shaft in up to the snap ring.
The shaft is now sticking up in the air if you can imagine. I got a bungee and hooked it in such a way as to get some compression onto the shaft and
cv. Then using a pair of small cold chisels I get the ends of the snap ring into the groove. The bungee gives just enough compression to stop the
ends of the snap ring jumping out. this leaves a hand free to tap the end of the of the shaft with a hide mallert and it just slides in.....ooh er
missus.
