Sierra column to escort rack
Evening chaps,
What bits do I need to get from my Sierra column to my escort rack please. Got in a muddle with what I need.

Sierra column, lower column with Flexi disc will work, you will probable need to cut and lengthen to suit. Alternatively you can use a splined shaft
with a triangular coupling to fit the upper column and a UJ to fit the Escort rack , ageing the length can be altered to suit . Rally design and Car
builders solutions sell the parts . Also be aware that the Sierra lower column was available in at least 3 different varieties of shaft diameter which
may cause clearance problems. Have a look on here for info on using a self aligning bearing instead of the Sierra bulkhead bush.

Cheers buddy. The self aligning bearing is one bit I'm struggling in finding info about.

The bearing is easy enough.
Your steering column pokes through the bulkhead. It’s supported by a two piece plastic bush inside a rubber one. To aid self centring by reducing
friction you ditch the outer plastic bush and the rubber bush. You keep the inner one that fits on the triangle and fit it into a self aligning 25mm
bearing and bolt it to the bulkhead.
It’s then a case of cutting and sleeving the Sierra bits.
On the to do list is replacing the 30 year old rubber coupling on mine with a nice uj but it’s a £100 touch plus work.

Does replacing the Sierra bits make much difference to self centering?

Not a lot, but when you only have half what it should be every little helps.
I’ve seen some of the plastic bushes with deep grooves worn in to them

I have sortof the same question but I'd like to know if there is any place I can buy a custom length splined shaft that fits the escort steering
gear?
The longest I've found is 600 mm and I need 625 mm. Cutting and welding is not really an option for me.

Have you made sure that the triangular section on the sierra column is out to it's full extension?

I have about 16 cm of the triangular piece sticking out of the column. Seems pretty rigid in place.
