Max gearbox powers!
Does any of you guys know what the specified maximum power and torque the cossie gearboxes can take, 2wd and 4wd. I've been thinking big power but
don't want the gearbox to split when I slam the fast pedal at 80mph in 3rd on a fast track. I've been thinking I might go for a 200sx engine and
gearbox combination as cossie parts are still expensive but a 200sx gearbox can easily handle 400bhp in stock form. I just want to draw up a
comparison. Any other high power gearboxes out there worth considering that can be had for under £100?

The Ford MT75 transmission used in the Cosworth 4x4 (and various 2wd models as well) is rated for 290Lbft I believe, although they can take a lot
more, durability is comprimised (as with any gearbox, can't belive the Nissan box is actually rated for 350lbft), in Escort and Sierra 4x4's they
often handle about 350 Lbft, the Cossie RWD box is used in US mustangs/other V8's and will take a bit more, over 400 lbft, BUT in non cossie trim
they aren't keen on revs (the cossie box was much modified to get it to last with input shaft speeds of the order of 6-6,5K), alternatively get a
Ford type 9 cheap and get a competition gera kit for it!
Also worth bearing in mind that with a locost, you'll have nowhere near enough traction in low gears to give the gearbox as much greif as it would
get in a heavier or 4x4 car!

I've seen Cossie's with 400bhp+ on standard boxes so it will definatly take it. The only question is for how long!
As a quick story, when I first had my 2.0 conversion done on my XR2 I was using the original (100k miles!) 1400cc box. It eventually did blow up but
it took six months of me thrashing it and nearly three times it's original power and even then I got a few weeks of warning with difficult to get the
gears, nasty noises before I lost the gears one by one (2nd and 3rd went first!)

All the people i've met who have cosworth sierras have the borg warner T5 box fitted.
These are the ones the yanks use in there V8s.
They are not cheap,probally the total build cost of some peoples cars.

After many beers with a cosworth owner,i am now informed that the T5 box the yanks use is beefed up a bit.
