Gear box

I took the cover plate of the gearbox to have a peek inside, thought there was a lot of sludge, so washed it out with parafin and put some new gear box oil in, there is a significant change in feel to turning the input to achieve output, would this sludge have caused a reduction in power if i had not washed it out?
