Halfshaft bearings

How difficult is it to change the Half Shaft bearings on a Mk2 Escort rear axle? Are there any special tools required?

Cheers

Easy'ish

Assume you have the half-shaft out already. You need to get the retaining collar off the shaft. There are 2 ways, 1. Heat it up until it will drop off - I do not like this as it requires putting a lot of heat into the shaft. 2. Use an angle grinder with a flexy sanding disc fitted to (carefully) grind it until it is so thin it will just crack under the hoop stress (it is quite easy as it goes blue and the fracture line is easy to see. Remove the bearing (which should slide off with not too much effort - may need a puller). Push the new bearing on. The new collar (supplied with bearing) needs to be heated with (ideally) oxy-acetylene to make it big enough to simply drop over the shaft. Allow to cool in air - no water!
BTW - Remember to make sure the bearing retainer plate is on behind the bearing before you drop the collar on (guess how I know!)

Hi there, I have just had the bearings changed by a man with the gear. A hydraulic press, I watched the operation, First he centre punched and then drilled the collar and then split it witha chissel, he then pressed off the bearing in the press, Installed the new bearing again on the press and then installed the new collar again on the press. He supplied the new bearings and fitted them for me for £45.00 well happy he lives out Newark way any good to you. I think he said it takes about 15 ton to remove the old ones. Regards Steve Evans.
