Handbrake problems.

I replaced the brake cylinder on my Mondeo mk 1 estate cos it was leaking = drums and bled the brakes. Footbrake works ok but handbrake doesn't. The handbrake on the side I took apart won't stop the wheel spinning. It pushes the pads out a bit but obviously not enough to have any effect. The other side works ok. I presume it's the auto adjuster in the drum not doing anything. The adjuster isn't jammed and looks in perfect condition. Any ideas anyone?

have you maually adjusted the auto adjuster up something like?

it's rare auto adjusters actually work unless they're set up approximatley first, if at all.

No I haven't. I just backed off the adjuster to make it easier to fit presuming it would self adjust anyway.
How do I manually adjust it? Basically it needs all the freeplay in cable taking up i would guess.

Remove the drum and spread the shoes apart to operate the adjusters. Put the drum back on and give the drum a tap to centralise the shoes. Do this until the shoes are just scuffing the drums.

You need to grind the lip off the drum to do this or the drum won't come off or go on with the shoes adjusted!

Handbrake cable shouldn't be adjusted until the shoes are adjusted correctly.

(1) Check the hand brake cable isn't seized.
(2) Check the handbrake isn't over tensioned -- self-adjusters need plenty of slack in the cable to work.

if not then

(3) Remove the drums and run the self-adjusters up by hand so you can just get the brake drum on and spin it. Also check everything inside the drum is fitted together properly.

Also check the self adjusters fine teeth are not worn . If they are then it is possible the adjuster could be slipping and letting its self off.At work we always replace these type of adjusters when we fit new brake shoes.
