atlas axle panic! HELP!

is the axle casing from, say, a 2.0 capri any different from a 2.8 capri?

i cant be certain but i think they are the same, i have a 2.8 lsd and have been told i could put the higher ratio cw+p from a 2 litre.

So a conclusive answer would be nice.

i hope you guys are right

been asking SHP about their half shafts for my truck. got this in an email

"These halfshafts are no longer a SHP held product as we only use G4 type in the current Pickup Trucks which in theory prove to be indestructable the only problem you have with these shafts is the side gears as they will need to be changed if you use a 2.8 Capri limited slip drive unit."

just got me worried why they were so specific about the 2.8 capri diff! and i thought the capri LSD would be the one that didn't need side gears replaced.

since my axle has cost the best part of £1000, and been built out of a 2.0 axle...

maybe its just the ratio they use? think mines 3.44

IIRC the atlas group 4 half shafts use a different no of splines (see burtons site) this is why the side gears need to be changed. AFAIK the axle range is the same across the capri range with the exception of the lsd unit in some of the 2.8's.

Yep just checked a group 1 shaft has 16 teeth and a group 4 has 18 teeth.

yeah, i knoew the different number of teeth, it just worried me where they said i'd need to change the side gears in the 2.8 capri diff, and not just the diff in general.

I was just worried in cas there wa something different about the casing in the 2.8 compared to the others that meant i'd just wasted a good few hundred quid retubing an axle from a 2.0, like the diff housing being different, and the diff a bit different, meaning the 18 tooth side gears wouldn't find my diff, and any of the 18 tooth side gears ONLY fit 2.8 diffs, which wouldn't fit my axle etc etc.

just sudden'y got me in a panic
