Ah bobbins, brakes won't fit :(

Bah, why does this car hate me?!?!?

Tried fitting some mk4 golf rear calipers to the car, but seems the bell of disc isn't deep enough (253mm or so diameter discs).

Piccies:

Rear caliper not fitting
Rear caliper not fitting

Are there discs which will fit?

Thanks,

James

Mk 3 escort fronts, have deeper bells, although IIRC you need to machine the sierra drive flange down a tad to fit inside. Still can't guarantee those calipers will fit mind. I gave up on them in the end, although that was more of a 13" wheel issue.

So basically I have two options, either make some spacers, or get an escort mk3 set of front discs, then modify the drive flange.

Once again, this site comes to my rescue!

Thanks

They look identical to the hydra-mechanical kit sold by rally design. Their discs have the part no BD147S on the periphery (ford escort 3/4 solid disc).

The depth from the disc face to front of the mounting flange is about 47mm so looks like it will be more suited to your setup.

You will have to turn down the rear hub drive flange to clear the inside of the bell.

James H - have you been able to make the calipers fit?

I've been trying to fit them for a while now. Started with MK's drum uprights which fouled the caliper. So exchanged them for the disc uprights which I was told would fit and they still didn't fit - the fluid inlet area was fouling the upright even with the mounting bracket supplied by Rallye Design. The bracket mounts foul on the upright too. I've taken an angle grinder to the upright but still no joy.

Basically I think I either need a larger diameter disc and new brackets to allow me to space the caliper further away, or to make my own upright to make sure there's enough clearance but it's still not guaranteed.

I'm fed up of the sight of it -- every time I go in the garage no the bl**dy thing's are looking at me. It's been 6 months since I made any progress now and I'm thinking of going to a drum setup since I've spent a load on new driveshafts bearings etc.

Hi Woz, I've PM'd you back!

Might have a way forward ditching the 240mm discs and using 273 dia discs and new brackets. Good thing I've got a bias valve already!

Cheers all

Jepy, any details on the new brackets? I'm also trying to solve the Golf caliper quandary at the mo - though using Sierra disc hub carriers rather than the drum version. I'm having the same offset issues, and my 272mm discs seem to still be about 20mm too small!

Hi Adam

I've started on the bracket this weekend. Just mocking up with 1mm steel then going to machine/make some out of 1/4" with some 1" round cut and drilled for the spacers.

I'm picking up the 2wd cossie discs tomorrow and will hopefully know in the next couple of days if it will fit.

I think the upright will still need the angle grinder treatment and I'll weld a bit more metal back in to make sure it's not weakened.

If this doesn't work, Mr Wozsher may have to be summoned before I take a lump hammer to it all

Think the 2wd cossie discs and new brackets will work.

Need to make up a bracket as per piccy and machine some spacers to position the caliper axially, but think we've got enough clearance not to cause too many issues with the upright etc.

Mocket it up with thin sheet, now need to get it cut in 1/4"

Sorry JEPY, didn't see your reply

I couldn't for the life of me get them to fit, there isn't enough clearance under the wheel, even with spacers. I got myself the wilwood handbrake calipers, and they seem fine with 273mm discs.

How have you got on with them?

James
