What IS tracking!?

Just setting up my car for SVA and am having a few issues...

What is tracking?!

People seem to suggest using fishing line and poles to check toe in and out. My very small brain just doesn't seem to be able to make sense of what I'm setting here...

Has anyone got a simple explanation / drawing of how to set up a simple set of tracking gauges?

Am I ensuring that the front and rear offside and nearside wheels are inline? And then setting a certain toe in and out?

Sorry for a very simple question...

Any starting geometries for good self centring? 1mm toe in all round seems fairly common?

Thanks for any help!?

Chris.

Think in terms of tracking being the parrallel-ness of the front wheels to each other.

So zero degrees toe means the the front wheels are exactly parrallel to each other.

Toe IN means leading edge of the front wheels are angled in towards the centreline of the car....

thats front to rear wheel tracking. The other kind of tracking is that which sets the front wheels parallel to each other, and then with degrees of toe in toe out as described by nick above.

use the straight poles to check the front and rear wheels arent like the first picture, then put them parallel to the centre line of the car and measure the toe angle, and make sure this is equal both sides.

edit to say the picture above has been photocopied or something on the wang, its meant to be straight up not diagonal

and that some suggested front toe angles are 0-0.5 degrees toe in, but its dependant on your car really, and toe doesnt have much affect on the self centering i dont think...
