Impreza Transaxle
Hi all,
Does anyone think the impreza transaxle would be happy putting all the engine's power through the front driveshaft output having had the OP to
the rear diff blanked off?
A lightweight kit car should minimise stresses and plenty of companies make LSDs for the Impreza front diff, but I assume in the Impreza it never sees
much more than 50% of the torque.
Any help much appreciated!

The front output can see most of the engine's torque if the back axle is slipping and the centre diff locks up, so should be rated
accordingly.
If you want to run like this continuously you'll have to weld up the centre diff rather than relying on it locking, because a, it can't
lock 100%, and b, you'll cook the viscous coupling.
Can't you use a 2WD transaxle from one of the 'lesser' Impreza models? I assume it'd fit the engine and be a much lighter and
more compact solution.

thanks for the replies guys. Would liek to keep it a '1-donor' solution but I guess a lower spec model would be more suitable and probably
strong enough, as long as there's an LSD available, which I'd like to have the option of.

There are OE parts available to lock the centre diff on current Subaru's. We use them all the time at work (we engineer LPG conversions and need
to put these cars on a 2WD chassis dyno). I do not know if the parts are also publicly available. I'd check with the UK importer; they might be
willing and able to help you out.
